Inflammation is the body’s natural response to protect against harm. An army of white blood cells are dispatched by the immune system to protect a perceived danger. This process can be seen when you cut your finger - the redness and swelling is the process of inflammation.

In this instance, inflammation is a good thing. Some types of arthritis, on the other hand, are the result of misdirected inflammation on the joints. Over time, inflammation within the joint causes irritation, swelling of the joint lining, and eventual wearing down of cartilage.

There are a number of foods associated with increased inflammation. By avoiding these foods and increasing intake of antioxidant-rich foods you can reduce arthritic flare-ups. Here are some swaps that can help...

Sugar and high-fructose corn syrup increase inflammation throughout the body. Instead, replace added sugar foods with no added sugar, and sweeten with fresh fruit which is packed with inflammation-fighting properties.

Vegetable oils have been shown to cause inflammation and increase disease risk. Instead, opt for olive oil, coconut oil, or avocado oil.

Processed meat, such as sausage, bacon, ham, smoked meat, and beef jerky, are also known as foods that produce inflammation. Fish, on the other hand, is packed of inflammation-fighting nutrients.

Making positive and healthy lifestyle choices is key to managing your arthritis. Having arthritis affects everyone differently. It’s important to address both the physical and emotional effects of arthritis.

Here are some self-management tips to consider:

Track your symptoms, pain levels, medications, and possible side effects to determine what works best for you.

Exercise. Even when it’s the last thing you want to do, exercise can strengthen muscles that support your painful joints, preserve and increase joint range of motion, improve sleep quality, boost your mood and sense of well-being, and help you lose excess pounds that add stress to painful joints.

Rest is important too. Don’t short change yourself on sleep and rest throughout the day as needed.
