Dr. Chet Weld, LPC joins Joshua Tree Counseling starting June 1st! Chet has been counseling the Tucson community for over 40 years and we are thrilled to have him as part of our team.

From Chet: "Half of the counseling that I do is couple counseling, and the other half is individual therapy. Couple counseling almost always involves helping clients to break conflictual patterns while helping them build their relationship. It often involves resolving extended family issues and sometimes focuses on bringing healing due to a breach of the marriage covenant. In individual counseling, I help people with a wide range of issues such as anxiety, depression, codependency, stress and coping skills. I counsel part-time and I’m available in the office or through convenient teletherapy. Whether you’re Christian, non-Christian, or simply seeking a more meaningful life, you’ll find that I’m 'warm and human first, professional always.'"

Many people don't think to tell their therapist they've experienced childhood trauma because they grew up in a non-abusive home and all their physical needs were met.
The absense of love is traumatic because we are wired to attach and connect and when we aren't shown physical love and comfort as children we develop attachment wounds.
Yet there are no boxes on therapy intake forms for attachment wounds. Depression? Yes. Anxiety? Always. Substance abuse, relationship distress, low self-esteem? Check, check, check.
Colin A Ross developed a model of trauma therapy that addresses the underlying causes of mental health diagnoses and comorbid addictions and he reasons that attachment wounds underlie these things. Trauma Model Therapy is one model used at Joshua Tree Counseling.

Human suffering is often the result of early messages we received in childhood about ourselves, others, and the world. Part of therapy is looking back to find those messages and choose whether to keep that recording or re-record a new one.

This is the resource wall in Rachel's office. It's not always comfortable making eye contact during therapy. The resource wall gives clients something else for their gaze to fall upon and contains images that bring a sense of peace, comfort, or joy which can also help to reorient dissociative clients. Which picture are you most drawn to?
