During labor, pain can activate the sympathetic nervous system
the body’s “alarm” state
creating tension in the circular fibers of the uterus
and rigidity at the cervix.
This tension can make the birthing process feel heavier,
slower, and more overwhelming.
But touch invites a different response.
A gentle, loving touch activates the parasympathetic system
the body’s natural calming pathway.
In this softened state,
the circular fibers of the uterus relax,
and the vertical fibers are stimulated,
allowing effacement and dilation to move forward
with more ease and cooperation.
Touch doesn’t take over the birth
it simply reminds the body
how to open.
