The Great Cover-Up returns!

For the 14th iteration of the popular local music event, The Great Cover-Up will, for the second consecutive year, be held on three nights and one afternoon at three beloved Tucson venues: Plush on Thursday night, Dec. 13; Club Congress on Friday night, Dec. 14; Club Congress during the day of Saturday, Dec. 15; and the Rialto Theatre on Saturday night, Dec. 15.

A brief primer on The Great Cover-Up: Over the course of three nights and one afternoon, local bands perform 20-minute sets of music by popular performing artists, with an emphasis on keeping secret just who is covering whom until the moment they perform. The proceeds from suggested donations are then given to a local charitable organization.

This year all net contributions will go to TAMHA, the Tucson Artists and Musicians Healthcare Alliance, which provides informational and monetary health-care assistance to people in the local arts community. Over the course of 13 years, The Great Cover-Up event has raised roughly $60,000 for local organizations like TAMHA and The Brewster Center.

Among the 50 local participants this year are Holy Rolling Empire, The Tryst, Saint Maybe, Chicha Dust (featuring Brian Lopez and Gabriel Sullivan), Leila Lopez, Roll Acosta, Spacefish, …music video?, LeeAnne Savage, The Tangelos, 8 Minutes to Burn, The Electric Blankets, Boreas, The Modeens and American Android.

Artists being covered include David Bowie, Katy Perry, Black Sabbath, Hall & Oates, Outkast, The Kinks, Paul Simon, The Smiths, Dixie Chicks, Tom Waits, Amy Winehouse and Fleetwood Mac.

The suggested donation for one night is $8; for any two nights, $12; and for all three, $15. Those who purchase a ticket for the day portion at Club Congress on Saturday will be granted admission to the Rialto Theatre that night.

Doors open at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday; noon for the day portion on Saturday; and 5 p.m. for Saturday night. Please note that Thursday at Plush and Friday at Club Congress are 21 and up only, whereas Saturday at both Club Congress and the Rialto Theatre are open to all ages.

Sponsors for this year’s event are KXCI 91.3 FM, Tucson Weekly, Sticks n’ Strings Music and Rainbow Guitars.
