🚨 URGENT: SAVE HOPWA FUNDING! 🚨

The Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program is on the chopping block in the proposed federal FY2027 budget. The proposal would eliminate ALL HOPWA funding — cutting it from $529 million to $0.

Last year, 55,000 families were housed through HOPWA.

The proposal suggests shifting people to the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program, but ESG does not provide the same long-term housing and supportive services. ESG focuses on short-term crisis response and rapid rehousing — while HOPWA supports long-term stability through services like career development, mental health support, and transportation.

Research from the CDC and HUD shows that stable housing lowers viral load and reduces HIV transmission by 20% or more — helping prevent new transmissions and allowing people living with HIV/AIDS to live healthier lives.

📣 Let your Members of Congress know how urgent and important this is. We must increase — not eliminate — HOPWA funding in the upcoming April budget hearings.

A message from our CEO, Carlos Hernández.

HOPWA funding is at risk—and with it, the health and stability of thousands of individuals living with HIV. We cannot stay silent. Contact Congress now and urge them to protect HOPWA.

Contact your members of Congress – NOW – and ask them to protect HOPWA

Beat the heat, Tucson ☀️🔥

Stay cool. Stay connected. Stay hydrated.

We loved being out in the community for the 2026 Community Heat Awareness event alongside incredible partners like the Red Cross, TEP, City of Tucson, and Pima County.

When temperatures rise, community care matters more than ever—and we’re proud to show up. 💧

About Us

The Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF) formed in 1997 as the result of a merger of three Tucson-based AIDS service organizations. In November 2014, SAAF acquired Wingspan, Southern Arizona’s LGBT Community Center. SAAF’s mission is to “cultivate a healthy and stigma-free society through transformative action.” Collectively, through its predecessor agencies, SAAF has served the community for more than 30 years by providing services to enhance the health and quality of life for those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS and to assist people in preventing HIV, Substance Abuse, Hepatitis C, and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). SAAF continually works to meet the needs of the LGBTQ+ community, and focuses on evidence-based prevention programs to reach at-risk populations.
