As a newborn photographer, I used to struggle with photographing awake babies. I’m very Type A and disciplined when it comes to my sessions. I like to be in control and follow a strict plan when it comes to my workflow. I learned very quickly that my Type A personality was in direct conflict with the personality of a newborn baby. THEY ARE 100% IN CHARGE THE ENTIRE TIME AND ANYONE WHO TELLS YOU OTHERWISE IS LYING! 😂 But once I embraced the fact that baby was in control and my job was to capture them exactly as they are and my desire for control and perfection was not nearly as important as documenting their personalities, I stopped being afraid of the babies that were awake and uncooperative and found ways to work with them while keeping them comfortable and content. I even started hoping that I would catch them awake for a portion of the session to see their pretty little wide eyes. Learning different ways to wrap was a game changer, too.
