All Saints’ Day is traditionally celebrated by Christians around the world, especially in the Catholic Church. In Western cultures, November 1 is directly tied to Halloween (October 31). The timing is linked to ancient Celtic traditions, where Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. This was the time when the boundary between the living and the dead was believed to be thin.

It honors all saints, known and unknown, who have led lives of holiness and are believed to be in heaven. Traditionally, it’s a day of remembrance and reflection, often accompanied by church services and visiting graves of loved ones.

November 1 kicks off the observances leading into All Souls’ Day, which honors all those that have died. In many cultures, November 1 and 2 are a time for family gatherings, prayers, and memorial rituals, for example, in Mexico and Latin America, November 1 is celebrated as Día de los Inocentes or Día de los Angelitos, honoring deceased children as part of Día de los Mu***os. In Scotland and Ireland, November 1 is part of Samhain traditions, which evolved into modern Halloween.

In short, November 1 is a day of remembrance, honoring the dead, and cultural reflection across many traditions.

On October 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty was officially dedicated in New York Harbor as a gift from France to the United States to celebrate the centennial of American independence and the friendship between the two nations.

It was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and its internal iron framework was engineered by Gustave Eiffel (yes! that Eiffel), the same man who built the Eiffel Tower.

Her full name is “Liberty Enlightening the World.” She represents freedom and democracy, holding a torch in her right hand and a tablet in her left that reads “JULY IV MDCCLXXVI” (July 4, 1776), the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

The statue’s green color comes from oxidized copper. Originally, she was a shiny reddish-brown, the same color as a new penny, but turned green after about 20 years of exposure to the elements. Its exterior is intentionally not cleaned to its original copper color because the green patina that has formed is a natural, protective layer against further corrosion. From heel to torch, the statue measures 151 feet, but with the pedestal and foundation, she stands at 305 feet tall — about the height of a 22-story building.

Even when you’re resting or sleeping, your brain is buzzing with electrical activity as neurons fire to regulate breathing, heartbeat, and dreams.

Rex Allen Rigney

If you ever heard a harmonica playing softly near a campfire, accompanied by a cold beer, a riddle, and a warm laugh—you might have been lucky enough to have met Rex Allen Rigney, Sr.

Born on May 17, 1962, in Bucyrus, Ohio, to Franklin and Patricia Rigney, Rex grew up learning the value of hard work, the importance of laughter, and the power of a good story. He eventually made his way to Texas, where fate introduced him to Mechelle, the woman who would become the love of his life. After a respectable period of “getting to know each other” they sealed the deal in 2006. They stuck by each other’s sides through thick, thin, and the occasional household project.

Rex was a man of peace and presence. He didn’t need the flashiest tools or the fanciest gadgets; give him a fire pit, a drink in hand, good music, and someone to swap stories with, and he was right at home. He had a knack for riddles that stumped you for hours and jokes that made you groan and laugh in equal measure.

He was a teacher without a classroom, a counselor without a degree, and a listener whose silence spoke louder than most people's words. If you were on the receiving end of one of his famous bear hugs, you knew without question that you were loved, because you feel the power of his love wrapped around you.

Whether he was fixing something (or taking it apart just to “see how it worked”), playing a tune on his harmonica, or simply sitting outside soaking in the world, Rex found joy in the everyday. He tackled life like he tackled his projects: with patience, purpose, and the occasional colorful phrase.

Rex was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Patricia, and a child, Cecil Wayne.

He leaves behind his steadfast wife and partner-in-life, Mechelle; his son, Rex Jr.; his children Veronica Willoughby, Tony Biddle, Aaron Biddle, Joseph Biddle, and Bradley Biddle; his father, Franklin Rigney (and wife Connie); and his best friends and brothers: Sam Rigney (and wife Regina), William Rigney, Frank Rigney (and wife Jeannie Hutchins), and Del Duffield. He also leaves his sisters Debbie Becker, Teresa Moose (and husband Perry), Tina Robertson (and husband Rodney), and Angie Duffield; and many extended family members and close friends.

Though the world feels a little quieter without Rex in it—and maybe a little less mischievous—we'll carry his stories, his music, his love, and maybe even a riddle or two with us always. Here's to the man who taught us how to laugh through the hard times, love through the mess, and keep a cold one ready just in case someone stops by to chat.

We’ll miss you, Rex. Keep the fire going—we’ll bring the beer.

Robert Charles Newton

Bob was a humble man best known for helping anyone he could with problems they were facing with a smile on his face. Robert Charles Newton, 71, of Catoosa, Oklahoma died on May 31, 2025

Bob was born in Oklahoma City, OK in 1953 to Eugene Leonard Newton & Evelyn Virginia Newton, as the third of nine kids in the Newton household. At the age of 4, Bob and his family moved to Tulsa in 1957 and stayed at the Desert Hills Motel while their home was being built in town. He attended elementary school through 8th grade at St. Pius X, before transferring to Nathan Hale High School and was apart of the graduating class of 1971. After graduating and doing a few small jobs, Bob joined his father at Mid-Central Fish Company and excelled at being a salesman in the area. Years later, as the company was acquired by Sysco Foods, Bob and his father purchased equipment to begin running their own local business, Blue Ribbon Foods Inc., out of a refrigerated truck and doing the bookkeeping out of the family home. Business began booming and later required the help of his two brothers David and Phil Newton for sales and delivery, and his sister Jan Unterweger for bookkeeping and sales by phone until the company chose to close its doors in 2018.

Bob met the love of his life, Linda Anne Wilson, in 1978, through a family friend and believed the way to her heart was through cleaning out her garage and doing extensive landscaping around her home. After many successful mowings of the yard, Bob had won a cruise to the Bahamas and it was there where their love for one another began. Excited to start their new lives together, the couple married one year later in 1979 at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church.

Bob and Linda were happily married for 24 years, each pursuing their own careers before their first and only child, Robert (Bobby) Noel Newton was born in 1998. Bob was delighted to be a father, and Bobby was the light of his life for the last 26 years of his life, never hesitating to make each moment a memorable and teachable experience as they bonded.

20 years later following the birth of his son, Bob became a grandfather to Coleman Presley Newton, and his grandson meant the absolute world to him. Bob treasured the time he got to spend with Cole around their house coming over for weekend visits and birthday parties, and was thankful that the family name would live on for years to come.

In his early years, Bob picked up an avid love of Golf. He would join his father, many prominent members of the Tulsa restaurant industry, and many friends that would golf 6 days a week for decades, all while betting (and losing) on almost every hole. Everyone who knew Bob, knew exactly what he was going to do once he retired. Bob LOVED doing yard work and landscaping his yards at any house he lived at, but especially his last yard, spending 10 hours a day making sure everything was manicured to perfection. It was never a surprise to drive by and see Bob mowing, burning leaves, or building something with landscaping blocks.

Bob will always be remembered for his smile and contagious laugh while joking with friends and family. We the family couldn’t have asked for a better brother, husband, father, and grandfather; and will miss his wisdom and kind soul every single day.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Virginia Newton, and his oldest brother Gary Newton, and is survived by his wife Linda Newton, son Bobby Newton, grandson Coleman Newton, five sisters; Carolyn, Debbie, Joy, Jan, and Elaine; and two brothers; Phil and David.
