“How do you teach someone to say their ‘R’ correctly?”
Well today we used sour candy to help us with placement of our tongue!👅
Learning a new sound can be overwhelming! We like to break it down into little parts with lots of prompting to help kids understand exactly what we’re asking of them. This often includes using all of our senses to support us!
Did you know that there are many different types of “R”s to learn and more than one way to produce the sound? “R” can be pesky, but we’ve got a bag of tricks to help!

Happy Halloween!🎃 We are wishing everyone a safe and happy time trick or treating tonight!
Before you head out to collect all the candy, practice trick or treating at your door with your child. Here are a few things you can review:
👻 -Sequencing- first knock, step back, “trick or treat”, take one, “Thank you!”
👻- Practice saying, “Trick or treat!”. If your child is minimally verbal or difficult to understand, write “trick or treat” on a piece of paper and attach to their bucket or a necklace. Model how to point to the picture while saying it.
👻- Talk about safety- practice responses to the command “stop” in a game. Talk about where to stand. Remind children to not enter other’s homes or touch pets without asking first.

And of course, have the most fun!

🌟 Say and Play Thursday 🌟
Did you know that giving your child choices is a great way to support language development?

💬 Try saying:
👉 “Do you want the red cup or the blue cup?”
👉 “Should we play with blocks or cars?”
👉 “Do you want more crackers or cheese?”
Even if your child isn’t using full words yet, you can encourage a gesture like pointing and then model the word for them:
🗣 “Car! Beep beep!”
Providing choices helps build vocabulary, encourages decision-making, and keeps communication fun and interactive — all key parts of early language growth!
Choices are also a great way to reduce frustration.
💡 Try it today during playtime or mealtime and watch those communication skills grow!

🎉 Happy AAC Awareness Month! 🎉
This month, we’re celebrating all the amazing ways people can communicate through AAC — Augmentative and Alternative Communication. AAC includes any form of communication other than spoken words, from gestures and pictures to high-tech communication devices.
We asked Ms. Kaylee, our NSU grad student at CSST, about her favorite topic she’s learned during her time with us, and here’s what she shared:
“I have really enjoyed learning about AAC! I’ve loved everything from modeling on a device to seeing firsthand how impactful and beneficial it can be for communication.”
In the photo, Ms. Kaylee is holding an example of a high-tech communication device. There are so many AAC options out there to support individuals of all ages, needs, and abilities — and we love seeing the difference they can make every day 💬✨

Ms. Kaylee finished up her externship last week and will be moving on to her next rotation. We’re so happy she spent 8 weeks with us! We’ll miss you Ms. Kaylee!

Board games aren’t just fun family time—they’re also a powerful tool for building your child’s speech, language, and executive functioning skills!
✨ When your child plays a board game, they’re working on:
🧩 Problem solving – figuring out the best moves
🕵️ Inferencing – predicting what might happen next
♟️ Strategizing – planning ahead
😊 Social skills – turn-taking, winning & losing gracefully
📖 Sequencing – following steps in order
All of these skills come together to strengthen executive functioning—the brain’s “control center” that helps kids focus, plan, and succeed in school and everyday life.
👉 Try it this week: Choose a favorite board game and notice all the ways your child is learning while playing. Every roll of the dice = a chance to grow!
