Breaking down tasks can be a helpful executive functioning tool, but sometimes we don’t think to apply it to smaller tasks.

I use Newton’s First Law of Motion to help get me going when I’m stalled out unable to start any task. Instead of trying to start the task, I just focus on getting in motion first. This can look like getting up to get a snack, checking the mail, doing some jumping jacks, or even just moving to a different room. Once I’m in motion it’s far easier to stay in motion and move into one of the tasks I need to do. Last year I started offering peer consultation around working with autistic and ADHD clients and really love it! There is a huge need right now for more therapists who work with ADHD and autistic clients. If you’re a therapist who would like to work with this population but don’t know where to begin, or maybe you already are doing this work but have cases that you feel stuck on, I’d love to help!

I hate that I can’t do more, but I can’t let that stop me from doing something.

Do you plan for transition time? Transitions are often hard for neurodivergent brains, so building in some transition time into our daily routines and schedules can be super helpful!
