A cough is common, but it isn’t always something you should ignore. It’s your body’s way of clearing your airway, but when it comes with other symptoms, it may be time to get medical care.

Go to urgent care if you notice:
• A cough lasting more than three weeks
• Ongoing cough with fever
• Thick green or yellow phlegm
• Fainting or shortness of breath
• Night sweats or unexplained weight loss

Head straight to the emergency room if your cough includes:
• Blood or pink-tinged mucus
• Sharp or persistent chest pain
• Vomiting or choking, especially in children
• Problems breathing or swallowing

Respiratory illnesses like cold, flu, whooping cough, pneumonia, COVID-19 and croup can cause coughing, so paying attention to additional symptoms is critical. If you’re ever unsure where to go, OU Health ER & Urgent Care locations can assess you and get you the right level of care quickly.

🩸 Could a simple blood test change how we detect cancer?

Imagine if a simple blood test could help detect cancer early—even before symptoms appear?

The Vanguard Study, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, is testing a new way to screen for multiple cancers. If you’re between the ages of 45-75 and haven’t had cancer recently, you could qualify.

Join a nationwide research effort that could change the future of cancer detection.

❤️ February 14th is National Donor Day ❤️

Valentine’s Day is known for celebrating love, but since 1998, February 14th has also been recognized as National Donor Day, a day to celebrate a different kind of love: the gift of life.

One organ donor can save up to eight lives. 💝

And donation goes beyond organs. This day also raises awareness for the life-saving impact of donating:
🫀 Organs
👁 Eyes
🩹 Tissue
🧬 Bone marrow
🩸 Platelets and blood

Registering as a donor is one of the most powerful ways to leave a legacy of hope. It’s a simple decision that can bring healing to families and second chances to those waiting.

Love isn’t just something we say, it’s something we do.

This Valentine’s Day, consider sharing the greatest gift of all: the gift of life.

Kindness is good for the heart 🤍
Research shows acts of kindness can lower stress and improve heart health for both the giver and receiver.

So give a box of chocolates or something special to a neighbor, a friend, or a stranger and know you are making both your lives a little richer in love and kindness.

✨ Share one small act of kindness you’ll do today.

💊✨ New Year, Safe Medications! ✨💊

The start of a new year is the perfect time to check your medicine cabinet and make sure everything is safe and up to date.

Use this simple checklist to protect yourself and your family:

✔️ Check expiration dates on all prescription and over-the-counter medications.
✔️ Safely dispose of expired or discontinued medications; don’t flush them or throw them loosely in the trash.
✔️ Find a safe disposal site near you using the Drug Disposal Locator Tool: https://safe.pharmacy/drug-disposal/
✔️ Carry an updated medication list in your wallet or purse.
✔️ Review your medication list with your provider and talk about how you’re actually taking your medications, especially if it differs from what was prescribed.
✔️ Only refill medications when it’s time. Your pharmacy can hold prescriptions until you’re ready.

Taking a few minutes to review your medications can prevent accidental misuse, improve safety, and give you peace of mind for the year ahead.

Safe habits today lead to healthier tomorrows. 💙

💛 February 11th is Make a Friend Day! 💛

Did you know this day has been celebrated since 2001? It was created to encourage people to step outside their comfort zones, reconnect with old acquaintances, and build new relationships.

Today is the perfect day to smile a little bigger and say “hello” to someone you meet.

Friendships are more than just fun, they’re powerful for your health. Research shows that strong social connections can:
✨ Reduce stress
✨ Improve mental health
✨ Boost happiness
✨ Even support heart health and longevity

In fact, studies have found that people with strong social relationships have better overall health outcomes and lower rates of anxiety and depression.

Connection is medicine. 💙

Whether it’s chatting with a coworker, reaching out to an old friend, or introducing yourself to someone new, small moments of kindness can spark meaningful relationships.

So today, take a chance. Say hello. Send the text. Start the conversation.
You never know, it might be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
