We welcomed physicians and staff from LSU Health Shreveport to Hillcrest Medical Center (HMC) this week to learn and collaborate on the future of lung care! We're just one of six hospitals in the country designated a Comprehensive Thoracic Oncology Program (CTOP), which means we host physicians and lung care staff from across the country at HMC and demonstrate how to provide the best, most advanced lung care available using the latest tools and technology.

This visit is especially timely during . Lung cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer, with the American Cancer Society estimating 125,000 deaths from the disease by the end of this year. We're pushing the boundaries of lung care through early detection and new technology, and we're proud to collaborate with other hospitals to bring cutting-edge care to people across the country.

At Hillcrest, complex GI care is a team effort. Our hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgeons, Dr. Jay Bergquist and Dr. Jennifer Kalil, partner with our advanced gastroenterology practitioners, Dr. Jeffrey Hunt, Dr. Kishore Vipperla, Dr. Harvey Tatum (not pictured) and other specialized support staff to provide coordinated, patient-centered care. These providers host a multi-disciplinary complex GI and HPB surgical clinic every week, facilitating the evaluation of patients requiring these services. This collaborative approach means patients receive prompt, integrated treatment close to home, without the added stress of traveling for expert care.

If you've ever had surgery, you'll know the emotional and physical stress that comes with preparing for the procedure and recovering after it's done. During , we want to spotlight the men and women who work hard to ensure a smooth surgical experience, start to finish.

The perioperative nurses are there before surgery, helping the patient with what to expect. In the operating room, they advocate for the patient while they're sedated. Those same nurses are there to help the patient emerge from anesthesia and transition to post-op care in a calm, safe environment.

Perioperative nurses have many responsibilities, but throughout the entire process, they have one person in mind — the patient. We sincerely appreciate our team of perioperative nurses who provide excellent, evidence-based care while also remaining committed to patient safety every day. Thank you for all you do!

Even when it’s cold outside, it’s important to be mindful of what’s in your baby’s sleep space.

To reduce your baby’s risk of SIDS and other sleep-related causes of infant death, keep “stuff” out of the baby’s sleep area. That means removing loose bedding, soft objects, toys and crib bumpers.

Hillcrest Medical Center partners with the Oklahoma State Department of Health to offer sleep sacks and pack-and-plays to ensure families have access to safe sleep options.
