Doula support and care isn’t exclusive to vaginal births. I was able to offer my clients unconditional support before, during, and after the beautiful birth of their babies. I just happened to be gowned up and holding a camera instead of a leg.

What a wonderful read! This article gives a comprehensive definition of who a Doula is and what a Doulas role is during pregnancy and birth.

“Taking into account the past definitions of advocacy for nurses, and the desire of many doulas to support the birthing person but not speak in place of them, I’d like to propose a new definition of advocacy in the context of doula care:

Advocacy is defined as supporting the birthing person in their right to make decisions about their own body and baby.”

A birth doula is a companion who supports a birthing person during labor and birth. What is the evidence for using a doula?

Amazing words!

Healthy mom, healthy baby. That's all that matters, right? Yes. Absolutely. But we can't ever forget that health is more than just a set of vital signs. "Healthy mom" encompasses mind, body, and soul.

When this mama had a traumatic (and unnecessary) c-section two years ago, she didn't get to see her placenta, touch her cord. Her care provider disregarded her feelings and her disappointment over and over again.

And so when I look at this image and see the tears of joy on this mama's face...I see true health, true life, true joy. I see what birth can look like when providers look at more than just numbers. And goodness, it's POWERFUL, LIFE-CHANGING stuff. (And yes, this type of care can absolutely happen EVERYWHERE: at home, at hospitals, in operating rooms, in birth tubs)
