October is SIDS Awareness Month

More than 50, 000 infants are born every year in Oklahoma. That’s why it is so important to involve as many people in the community as possible to get the safe sleep guidelines out to the public.
Agencies collaborate to promote infant safe sleep environments

Oklahoma’s Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is decreasing, but infants dying from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) still ranks in the top three causes of infant death, according to public health officials at the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH). SIDS is the leading cause of infant death in Oklahoma for ages one month to one year old. SIDS is the sudden death of an infant younger than one year of age that does not have a known cause after investigation.

Oklahoma’s overall IMR continues to decline, dropping from 8.6 per 1,000 live births in 2007 to 6.8 per 1,000 live births in 2013, saving an additional 34 babies’ lives over last year, according to the vital statistics data from the OSDH. The IMR decreased in all categories except African American infants. The IMR of African Americans in Oklahoma rose from 14.0 per 1,000 live births in 2012, to 16.5 per 1,000 live births in 2013. African American infants are also the most likely to be laid on their stomachs to sleep, which is a known risk factor for SIDS.
