Hello from Phobos Behavioral of South Tulsa! Today, we are showcasing how we help our clients communicate their needs and wants appropriately!
Individuals on the autism spectrum often have trouble communicating as well as controlling impulses whenever they want to do something or go somewhere. This can impede them, which can lead to frustration for them, their caretakers and others!
To most, this is but a few unassuming pieces of tape in the shape of a square on the ground & some plastic cards with basic actions depicted on them. We are using these squares as 'doorways,' meant to serve as a location for our clients to point to a card and indicate what they want or where they want to go. In addition to teaching them to mand for what they want by pointing, we also teach them that what they point to is what occurs. They learn how to differentiate between requests and how to accept “not available”, “wait” , or “later”.
Communication is a skill every person could improve at, so we are helping with those skills in these transitions as well as patience and structure.
We look forward to helping you too here in South Tulsa!
