A Marine reservist came in for a routine annual physical with elevated blood pressure. His provider talked through lifestyle changes, asked him to follow up after summer training, and waited. He did not come back for months.
When he did return, she picked up right where they left off. Through October, January, and February, he pushed back on medication, but the provider kept meeting him where he was. By February he had quit ni****ne pouches. By April he had researched his family history, been flagged at a VA dental appointment, and came in ready to try medication. She started him on the lowest effective dose and they have been adjusting together since.
His last appointment, his blood pressure was controlled and he felt great. Patient-first care takes time, trust, and persistence. That's
