As a pediatric APRN, I love reminding parents that simple, everyday play is actually evidence-based and critical for your child’s development. You don’t need fancy toys—just a little time and intention!
Here are a few research-backed ways to play with your toddler:
✨ Follow their lead
Let your child choose the activity and join in. This builds confidence, independence, and connection.
🗣️ Narrate everything
Talk about what they’re doing (“You’re stacking the blue block!”). This supports language development and early communication skills.
📚 Read together daily
Even short, simple books help build vocabulary and attention. Let them turn pages and point to pictures!
🎭 Pretend play matters
Play kitchen, dolls, or even “feeding” stuffed animals helps develop social and emotional skills.
🧩 Encourage problem-solving
Simple puzzles, stacking, or shape sorters build early cognitive skills—give them time to try before stepping in.
🎶 Add music and movement
Songs, dancing, and clapping games improve coordination and memory (and they’re so fun!).
❤️ Keep it simple & consistent
Just 10–15 minutes of focused, distraction-free play each day can make a big impact.
You are your child’s most important teacher—and the best part is, they think you’re just playing 😊
