The Commission

It is the purpose and responsibility of the Medical Quality Assurance Commission (MQAC) to protect the public by assuring quality healthcare is provided by physicians and physician assistants. The commission establishes, monitors, and enforces qualifications for licensure, consistent standards of practice, and continuing competency. The commission currently regulates about 30,000 licenses, over 2,500 of which are PAs. Rules, policies, and procedures developed by the commission promote the delivery of quality healthcare to the people in Washington. The commission is composed of 21 governor-appointed members and pro-tem members appointed by the Department of Health Secretary. There are opportunities each June for new Commission member candidates to be considered.

This Black History Month, we honor Dr. Helen Octavia Dickens, a trailblazer in medicine and a champion for equity.

In 1950, she became the first African American woman admitted to the American College of Surgeons. The daughter of a former slave, Dr. Dickens rose above racism and discrimination to earn her M.D., become a board-certified OB-GYN, and later serve as Associate Dean for Minority Affairs at the University of Pennsylvania. Where she increased minority enrollment from 3 students to 64 in just five years.

A fierce advocate for women’s health and teen pregnancy prevention, Dr. Dickens dedicated her life to caring for underserved communities and opening doors for future generations.

The Washington Medical Commission proudly acknowledges Fatima Mirza, Program Case Manager, for her testimony this morning before the Washington State Senate in support of Senate Bill 6258.

SB 6258 would create a voluntary, non-disciplinary pathway for licensees to relinquish their licenses. Under the bill, license relinquishment would not be considered an adverse action or reported to disciplinary databases, providing clarity and dignity for medical professionals in Washington who choose to step away from practice.
