Today we celebrate the heart behind so much of what we do at Sanctuary.

Lisa Swords and Laura Hellums have worked side by side for many years, walking with families through some of life’s most tender moments. They know our mission not just in words, but in action, and they carry it with love every single day.

From sitting quietly with families, to offering guidance during difficult decisions, to simply being a steady, compassionate presence… they remind us what hospice care is truly about.

We are so grateful for the way they serve, support, and love our patients and families.

Happy Social Work Day, Lisa and Laura 🤍

We may be a little late, but we didn’t want to miss the chance to say thank you to someone who helps keep our Sanctuary running!

A few weeks ago was Maintenance Professionals Day, and we are so grateful for our very own Chris. From making sure we’re ice-storm ready, to keeping our building safe and comfortable, to scaling scissor lifts and helping us transform the space for Celebration Village, Chris is truly a man of many talents.

Behind the scenes, he helps make sure Sanctuary is always ready to serve the patients and families who walk through our doors.

Chris, we appreciate you more than you know. 🔧

Today we recognize Funeral Director and Mortician Appreciation Day.

These professionals walk with families during incredibly tender moments. We are grateful for the compassion, professionalism, and dignity they bring to the families we both serve.

Thank you for the meaningful work you do in our community. 💛🦋

People often ask me, “How do you sit with someone who is dying? What do you say? How do you do this work?”

Many believe there must be special tools, the right words, some kind of wisdom you learn from books or training.

But the truth is much simpler.

This work has taught me that death is not chaos. It is a process. The body knows how to die just as surely as it knows how to be born, and each one does it in its own way.

What death and dying need most is a calm presence.

Our job is not to fix it, control it, or perform something heroic.
We are not magicians.
We don’t wear capes.

After witnessing enough final breaths, something in you begins to settle. Death stops surprising you, and because of that, you stop bringing urgency, fear, or drama into the room.

You learn to trust the body and the process it is moving through.
You learn to slow down.
To listen more than you speak.
To let the moment belong to the person who is dying and the people who are preparing to say goodbye.

You don’t rush it.
You don’t try to control it.
You simply remain present and allow it to unfold.

Because in the end, the body knows how to die. Sometimes what it needs most, is someone who is not afraid to be there when it does.

Today, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of one of Sanctuary’s longest-serving volunteers and dedicated advocates, Doc Robbins.

Doc was a familiar and beloved presence around Sanctuary. From his time at the Village Shoppe—where fellow volunteers loved him dearly and never missed a chance to tease him (see pic below)—to standing at the doors each year with Lauren Patterson to welcome guests to Celebration Village, he gave his time with a joyful spirit. On Saturdays during Celebration Village, you might hear Doc’s voice over the PA system sharing game scores so shoppers wouldn’t miss a moment while they browsed. At the Hospice House, he was known for lifting the spirits of patients, families, and staff with his kindness and warmth.

Doc left his mark not only on Sanctuary, but on the hearts of so many in this community. We are grateful for the years he gave us, the laughs we shared, and for the difference he made in the lives of others.

Please keep his family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers in the days ahead. 💙

🌟 Employee of the Month – January 2026 🌟

Please join us in congratulating our January Employee of the Month, Sandra Parker, our incredible Dietary Manager!

Sandra leads the heart of our Sanctuary kitchen, guiding her team in preparing the delicious meals and treats that bring comfort to our patients, families, and staff each day. Her creativity shines through in everything she does — from beautifully presented dishes for special events to the homemade cakes she lovingly bakes for Celebration Village.

During the recent ice storm, when many of our staff sheltered in place to continue caring for patients, Sandra made sure everyone was nourished and cared for as well. From a fully laid-out taco bar to warm, comforting meals, she and her team went above and beyond to lift spirits.

Sandra pours her heart into every plate that leaves the kitchen, and her kindness, dedication, and creativity make a lasting impact on our entire Sanctuary family. We are truly grateful for the love she serves through her work each and every day.

Congratulations, Sandra, and thank you for all you do! 💙

💙 NEW SERIES: DID YOU KNOW?

When people hear “Sanctuary Hospice,” many immediately think of our Hospice House and we’re so proud of the comfort and care provided within those walls.

But did you know that much of our care happens right in the homes of patients across our community?

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing simple “Did You Know?” moments to help families better understand hospice, the support available at home, and what makes Sanctuary special.

Hospice is about more than a place.
It’s about people, comfort, and care wherever you choose to call home.🏠
