HISTORY

James D. Havens (1900-1960). James was a patient of Dr. John R. Williams of Rochester, N.Y. Havens was diagnosed at the age of 14. Though ill, he managed to to complete high school and 3 years at the University of Rochester. On the verge of death, Insulin was sent to Dr. Williams from Toronto by Dr. Frederick Banting and was first administered to Havens on May 17, 1922 when he was 22 years of age. He was the first diabetic patient to receive Insulin in the U.S.A. He became a celebrated artist, was happily married and had two children.
