Happy National Crab Rangoon Day from The Manor on Lawndale!
Today we’re celebrating one of the most beloved appetizers in American Chinese cuisine — the irresistible crab rangoon! This unofficial holiday, founded in 2009 by friends Sarah White, Kara Sweeney, and Kristin Ostrem, was created as a cheerful alternative to the Valentine’s Day blues. Set on February 13, it encourages people to gather with friends, share good food, and enjoy a little lighthearted fun.
Crab rangoon has a flavorful history, too. Though often linked to “Polynesian” menus of the mid‑20th century, the dish became widely popular in the 1950s when it appeared on the menu at Trader Vic’s — a restaurant famous for tiki‑style cuisine. From there, it spread across the country under names like crab puffs, cheese wontons, and fried crab pockets.
🦀 Whether you enjoy yours with sweet‑and‑sour sauce, plum sauce, or just as they are, today is the perfect day to savor a crispy bite and celebrate the joy of friendship.

Happy National Peppermint Patty Day from The Manor on Lawndale!
Today we’re celebrating the classic combination of crisp peppermint and rich dark chocolate—a flavor pairing that has stood the test of time. Peppermint patties have a surprisingly long and charming history, beginning in 1840 with the Quiggin family on the Isle of Man. Their recipe inspired generations of candy makers, eventually leading to the famous York Peppermint Patty, first produced in 1940 and beloved for its signature “snap.”
Peppermint patties are known for their refreshing coolness, lighter calorie count compared to many candy bars, and that satisfying bite that makes them such a treat. Whether enjoyed on their own, paired with coffee, or used in creative desserts, they bring a little burst of minty joy to the day.
🍬 Wishing our residents, families, and staff a sweet, refreshing, and delightful National Peppermint Patty Day!

Happy National Ballet Day from The Manor on Lawndale!
Today we celebrate the timeless beauty of ballet—an art form that blends athleticism, music, and emotion into something truly magical. Ballet began in the 15th‑century courts of Italy and France, where it was performed at royal celebrations before evolving into the refined, technical art we know today.
By the 17th century, ballet flourished under King Louis XIV, who founded the Académie Royale de Danse in 1661—the world’s first ballet school. This helped transform ballet into a structured discipline with codified movements and training.
National Ballet Day itself is a modern celebration, officially established in 2015 after a viral video of a young girl attempting her first ballet steps inspired a wave of global appreciation. Since then, dancers, studios, and fans worldwide have embraced February 7 as a day to honor the art form.Whether you’ve danced on stage, admired ballet from the audience, or simply appreciate its beauty, today invites us to pause and enjoy the artistry that has inspired people for centuries. Ballet reminds us that movement can be poetry—and that strength and softness can coexist.
Wishing everyone a graceful and uplifting National Ballet Day!

Happy National Bubblegum Day from The Manor on Lawndale!
National Bubblegum Day began in 2006, created by children’s author Ruth Spiro as a playful way for kids to support charity while enjoying a rare treat: chewing gum at school. Students traditionally donate 50 cents for the privilege, with all proceeds going to a cause chosen by the school. Adults, libraries, and community centers often join in too, turning the day into a cheerful fundraiser.
Bubblegum itself has a fun history. The first modern bubblegum was invented in 1928 by Walter Diemer, who created a stretchy, less‑sticky formula that became Dubble Bubble. Its signature pink color wasn’t intentional—pink was simply the only dye available that day!
And for trivia lovers:
• The largest bubble ever blown measured 20 inches across.
• People around the world chew roughly 100,000 tons of gum each year.
💗 Whether you prefer classic pink, fruity flavors, or minty varieties, today is all about fun, generosity, and a little bit of childlike joy.

Happy Western Monarch Day from The Manor on Lawndale!
Today we pause to honor one of nature’s most breathtaking travelers—the Western Monarch butterfly, whose brilliant orange wings have become a symbol of resilience, beauty, and hope. Celebrated every year on February 5, this day recognizes the monarch’s extraordinary migration back to the California coast, where they gather in shimmering clusters after journeys that can span nearly 3,000 miles.
Western Monarch Day was officially established by the California State Legislature in 2004, chosen to coincide with the time of year when the largest populations return to their overwintering groves. These butterflies aren’t just beautiful—they’re essential pollinators whose presence supports entire ecosystems across the western United States.
Yet their numbers have dropped dramatically in recent decades, making conservation more important than ever. Habitat loss, climate shifts, and declining milkweed populations all threaten their survival. Today reminds us how interconnected we are with the natural world—and how even small acts, like planting milkweed or protecting green spaces, can help these winged wonders thrive.
🦋 May the monarch’s journey inspire us all—toward hope, renewal, and the quiet power of returning home.

Happy National Homemade Soup Day from The Manor on Lawndale!
There’s nothing quite like a warm bowl of homemade soup to chase away the winter chill—and today, February 4, we celebrate the comfort, history, and heart behind this timeless dish.
Soup has been nourishing people for hundreds of years, when early cooks boiled plants and meats in newly invented waterproof clay containers. Over time, every culture developed its own signature soups, shaped by local ingredients and traditions.
National Homemade Soup Day honors that rich history and encourages everyone to enjoy a pot made with fresh ingredients, creativity, and a little love. As one source beautifully puts it, homemade soup is “a hug in a bowl”.
From creamy chowders to hearty vegetable soups, from broths to bisques, there are thousands of varieties—each one offering warmth, nourishment, and memories shared around the table.
🍲 Whether you prefer classic chicken noodle, tomato basil, potato, or something adventurous, today is the perfect day to savor a bowl of comfort.

Happy National Carrot Cake Day from The Manor on Lawndale!
Today we celebrate one of the most comforting, spice‑kissed desserts of all time—carrot cake! Observed every year on February 3, this day honors the moist, flavorful treat that blends simple ingredients with a whole lot of nostalgia.
Carrot cake has deep historical roots. Many historians trace it back to Medieval carrot pudding, a dish created when sugar was scarce and sweet vegetables were used instead. During World War II, carrot‑sweetened recipes surged again as Britain rationed sugar and encouraged citizens to bake with carrots.
The earliest known carrot cake recipe appeared in a French cookbook in 1827, later published in Britain. By the 1960s, carrot cake had become a beloved dessert across American dinner tables—and it’s been a favorite ever since.
🥕 Whether you enjoy it studded with nuts, layered with cream cheese frosting, or kept simple and spiced, today is the perfect day to savor a slice of this classic treat.
Wishing everyone a sweet and cozy National Carrot Cake Day!

Happy Groundhog Day from The Manor on Lawndale!
Every year on February 2, we celebrate the charming tradition of Groundhog Day, a blend of folklore, history, and mid‑winter hope. According to the old Pennsylvania Dutch belief, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow, we’re in for six more weeks of winter. If no shadow appears, folklore promises an early spring.
This tradition traces back to German Candlemas lore, where animals like badgers or bears were believed to predict the weather on this mid‑winter date. When German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania, the groundhog became the new weather‑watcher of choice.
The most famous celebration takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where “Punxsutawney Phil” has been making predictions since 1887. The event has grown into a full‑scale festival, drawing thousands of visitors each year and even inspiring the beloved 1993 film Groundhog Day.
Whether Phil sees his shadow or not, the day reminds us that winter is halfway over—and brighter days are on the way.
🦫 Wishing everyone a cozy, hopeful, and fun Groundhog Day at The Manor!
