What Trigeminal Neuralgia Is

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a neuropathic pain disorder involving the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V), which provides sensation to the face.

Classic symptoms
• Sudden electric shock–like or stabbing facial pain
• Usually unilateral
• Episodes last seconds to minutes
• Triggered by:
• chewing
• brushing teeth
• talking
• wind on the face
• touching trigger zones

Neuromodulators (TOX) for Trigeminal Neuralgia has become an increasingly studied off-label treatment for patients whose pain is not controlled with medications or who cannot tolerate medication side effects. Since you’re evaluating this clinically, I’ll break it down in a way that’s medically practical.

Etiology
• ~80–90% of cases are caused by vascular compression of the trigeminal nerve root.
• ~5–8% are associated with Multiple Sclerosis.
