When you look at this building, you might notice the brick exterior, the big blue door, or the wooden shutters. And while all of that is true, what I see is something deeper: hope, compassion, change, and new beginnings.

Within these walls, there is laughter, there are tears, and there is relief. Soft music helps settle the nervous system. The artwork and décor are chosen to spark imagination, comfort, and possibility.

As a young woman with a dream, I imagined a place where every client would be met with dignity. A place where care would be coordinated thoughtfully, where respect would be the norm, and where the owner would invest not only in clients, but in staff. Perception Counseling Services became that vision brought to life.

As we continue to serve our community, my hope is that your experience here has exceeded expectations. Our goal is simple yet profound: to ensure you feel welcomed, heard, supported, and respectfully challenged as we walk alongside you toward your goals.

with Shelton State Community College! ✨️✨️✨️

I’m excited to continue our partnership with Shelton State Community College as we host this year’s Health and Wellness Seminar Series. Yesterday’s opening session had an incredible turnout, and it was powerful to see so many students show up for conversations that truly matter.

College students are carrying more than books and deadlines — many are navigating stress, loneliness, identity pressures, and the constant comparison culture of digital life. When we create intentional spaces to talk about mental health, students gain tools that strengthen their confidence, focus, and overall wellbeing.

These seminars are designed to help students build community, manage stress, and develop healthier habits that support both their academic journey and their personal growth. The energy from yesterday’s session made it clear: students are hungry for support, connection, and real conversations.

Alabama’s new law, Senate Bill 101 (SB101), raises the age at which minors may independently consent to medical, dental, and mental health treatment from 14 to 16 years old unless certain exceptions apply. The stated goal of the new law, effective October 1, is “to provide that it is the fundamental right of a parent to make decisions concerning the health care of his or her child.”

This new law also requires health care providers to grant a parent or legal guardian access to the minor’s medical records unless a court order prohibits or restricts the parent or legal guardian’s access to such records or the parent or legal guardian is under investigation for a crime against the minor. While not directly relevant to the provision of health care services, SB101 also requires written parental permission for minors under 16 to receive school counseling services unless certain emergency circumstances apply.

Under SB101, minors under 16 may still consent to certain types of health care services specifically:

✨️Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
Treatment to determine the presence of any reportable disease
✨️Pregnancy prevention and treatment
✨️Alcohol and drug dependency treatment

SB101 does not limit or preclude the provision of any health care services to a minor when the health care provider has a good faith belief that one of the following emergency conditions exist:

✨️An imminent threat to the health of the minor or others.
✨️Suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation or
Immediate need for grief counseling.

In addition, minors under 16 may consent to medical, dental, and mental health treatment if one of the following exceptions apply. The minor has:

✨️Graduated from high school.
✨️Is married, divorced, or has borne a child.
✨️Is pregnant.
✨️Is emancipated or
Health care entities that offer medical, dental, and mental health treatment to minors should review their policies and procedures governing patient consent and disclosure of patient health information to assess for any changes needed as result of Alabama’s new law.

Also, they should consider what training might be needed to educate health care providers and other personnel on these new policies and procedures. In particular, health care providers should consider reviewing documentation requirements:

Update intake forms to include revised age thresholds and exception criteria.
Verify a minor’s status and confirm and document eligibility under exceptions.
Clearly document whether consent was obtained from the minor or a parent.
Ensure that procedures are in place to assess and document emergency exceptions and
Provide for periodic review to update consent forms and staff training to reflect legal changes.

Starting October 2 at 5PM, we’re offering weekly support groups for ages 12–15. These one-hour sessions will meet once a week for 6 weeks and are designed to help young people build self-esteem, improve communication skills, learn calming techniques, and so much more—all in a safe, welcoming environment.

Led by caring professionals, these groups are a great way for pre-teens to connect, grow, and feel supported. ✅️✅️✅️

Salacia Jones is a proud graduate of the University of Alabama, where she earned her degree in Human Environmental Sciences. Currently pursuing her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Salacia brings heartfelt dedication to her work with children and adolescents, helping them navigate life’s challenges with compassion and clarity.

Guided by a deep commitment to inclusivity and emotional safety, Salacia strives to create a welcoming space for clients of all backgrounds. Her approach centers on fostering resilience, building healthy coping skills, and empowering young people to grow with confidence and hope.

Outside of her professional journey, Salacia finds joy in attending sporting events, spending meaningful time with family, and discovering new places through travel—experiences that enrich her perspective and deepen her connection to others.
