ALL forms of communication require the most complex fine motor movements our bodies perform. Obviously at the highest level is spoken language. However, even the use of AAC, sign language, typing require complex fine motor control.
For someone with a complex sensory and motor system, planning and executing motor movements for communication might feel like climbing Mount Everest!
My mantra- It’s not about won’t, it’s about, can’t—YET!
Spoken communication does NOT occur in the same area of the brain as comprehension of language. If you have a client, student, child that is minimally or nonspeaking (without other neurological comorbidities), you MUST presume competence until they have a consistent way of showing you otherwise.
I challenge you to MATCH their level of determination and work identify how to support their most reliable and consistent form of communication whether it is spoken, AAC, typing, letterboard, sign language or otherwise.
