Communication looks different for everyone.
Speech is one way to communicate — but NOT the only way.

For many autistic and nonspeaking individuals, communication may happen through AAC, movement, typing, or gestures.

Our job as professionals and partners is to honor and support ALL forms of communication and never measure connection by spoken words alone.

Believe in their competence!

If someone’s responses are inconsistent, it doesn’t mean they don’t know. If their responses are limited, it doesn't mean they don't know.
Unreliable communication often reflects motor or regulation challenges — not cognitive limits.
Believe in their competence. Always presume potential

Until a person is able to consistently communicate, you have ZERO evidence they don't know or are incapable of understanding.

Most likely, they understand EVERYTHING!

When communication is hard, our job is to PAUSE — not push

If a communicator isn’t responding, we WAIT — not push.

As communication partners, it’s our responsibility to slow down, model, and SUPPORT regulation.

We meet them where they are, not where we wish they’d be.

Before communication, there must be connection.

Communication grows from co-regulation — the shared calm, safety, and rhythm between communication partners builds trust and security. With safety communication (all forms) grows!

When a child feels safe and regulated, their brain and body are more ready for speech, AAC use, and learning.

When we support the body, we support the brain. Movement can unlock communication.
Movement and communication are deeply connected.
A body that struggles to plan movement will often struggle to plan speech.
Supporting gross and fine motor development can open doors for better communication outcomes.

As SLP's we commonly incorporate movement through swings, hopping, reaching, etc.
Try working in purposeful movement into your sessions.

Co-regulation isn’t about calming someone down — it’s about being calm together.

When a communicator becomes dysregulated, their ability to plan, move, and access words can disappear.

Similar to airplane safety (your mask on first) ✈️ regulate yourself first-- only then can you help regulate your partner.

Your presence (how you show up, your "vibe"), tone, and patience can be the bridge to communication.

Regulated adults help create regulated communicators. 💙

ALL forms of communication require the most complex fine motor movements our bodies perform. Obviously at the highest level is spoken language. However, even the use of AAC, sign language, typing require complex fine motor control.

For someone with a complex sensory and motor system, planning and executing motor movements for communication might feel like climbing Mount Everest!

My mantra- It’s not about won’t, it’s about, can’t—YET!

Spoken communication does NOT occur in the same area of the brain as comprehension of language. If you have a client, student, child that is minimally or nonspeaking (without other neurological comorbidities), you MUST presume competence until they have a consistent way of showing you otherwise.

I challenge you to MATCH their level of determination and work identify how to support their most reliable and consistent form of communication whether it is spoken, AAC, typing, letterboard, sign language or otherwise.

For individuals with apraxia, every spoken word is an act of EFFORT and COURAGE.

What seems “simple” to a natural speaker such as a "hello, yes, no" — requires multiple complex motor steps to achieve. When you have an unruly body even a consistent "Yes" or "No" head nod can be elusive.

Yet, they still try everyday! I think we don't take NEAR enough time to ponder what that might be like, how hard they continue to TRY, how frustrating it MUST be to NOT be understood, let alone have people think they don't understand what is being said.

I would argue my nonspeaking students with complex sensory and motor systems are the BRAVEST humans I have had the PLEASURE to work with! My team and I try daily to discover how their bodies will allow them to communicate.

Tell them and acknowledge every attempt. Make sure their efforts are SEEN and to not give up trying! Together we will find a way for them to be HEARD!

True advocacy means recognizing all communication — not just spoken communication. Every voice deserves to be heard.

True advocacy means recognizing that not all communication looks or sounds the same.

Whether through spoken language, AAC, gestures, or sign language-- every individual has a voice.

💡 In your IEP goals use the phrase "using their preferred mode of communication" this gives the choice to the student/client

Our mission as SLPs is to amplify and inspire, not replace, that voice.

👋 Hi, I’m Elizabeth!
I earned my Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology from Baylor University 💚🐻 and have a huge passion for language and literacy!

When I’m not helping others find their voice using all mode of communication.

I love spending time with my husband, family, and friends — usually laughing, exploring, or enjoying some good food. 🍽️💛

Fun fact: Costco is her happy place 😎🛒

Add this statement to your IEP under accommodations:

[Student] will be provided unrestricted access to their speech generating device throughout the school day.

This will support and ensure your student's device will not be in a drawer, on a shelf or unused. Don't forget light tech options as well.

The inability to speak is already difficult- let's all work together to ensure our students have access to all forms of communication at all times.

💡 Did you know? Research shows that introducing AAC early does not impede the development of verbal speech — in fact, it often supports it!

By offering multiple ways to communicate, children feel empowered and find their voice sooner.

Let’s reshape the conversation: AAC isn’t a replacement, it’s a pathway.
