Andrews Behavioral Health is seeking volunteers with lived experience of su***de loss to support grieving families through its HEARTS LOSS Team, with training scheduled for Jan. 23 in Tyler.

“The HEARTS LOSS Team is made up of trained volunteers who provide presence, understanding, and compassionate listening to individuals and families navigating life after a su***de death,” said Reagan Preznik, LOSS Team Coordinator.

For those who have lost a loved one to su***de, support from others who understand can be life-changing, she added. The team will consist of volunteers that include individuals with personal lived experience of su***de loss, as well as mental health professionals who feel called to support survivors.

“A caring community means supporting families after a tragic death has occurred,” said Mari Gutierrez, Su***de Prevention Coordinator. "Surviving a su***de loss is something too many people face, and with rising su***de rates in East Texas, families need more support than ever.”

Andrews Behavioral Health provides free training for LOSS Team volunteers, along with clear guidance, boundaries, and ongoing support to ensure volunteers feel prepared and supported.

Participation is carefully paced, and personal sharing is never required. Volunteers are always free to step back if needed.
“Taking care of families after the death of a loved one is an important part of any community,” Gutierrez said. “That responsibility becomes even more important when the death is due to su***de."

January is an open door to a fresh start

A new year often comes with unspoken pressure — to feel refreshed, motivated, and ready to move forward. But for many people, January is less about momentum and more about recovery. As the decorations come down and routines return, it’s common to experience an emotional dip sometimes referred to as “post-holiday blues.”

According to Andrews counselor Neisha LeStage, this shift is one of the most overlooked seasonal challenges:

“People expect to feel renewed after the holidays. But in reality, they’re often carrying exhaustion, financial stress, family tensions, and the emotional whiplash of going from celebration to quiet. Feeling low during this transition is more common than people realize — and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

Neisha emphasizes a few important truths to keep in mind during January:

💚 Post-holiday emotional dips are real.
The abrupt shift from anticipation, social gatherings, and structured schedules back into everyday life can leave people feeling flat, irritable, or sad.

💚 It’s not just emotional.
Reduced sunlight, disrupted sleep, changes in routine, and overextension can all intensify seasonal mood shifts.

💚 You don’t have to “power through.”
Talking with a mental health professional or a trusted friend can help restore perspective and balance before stress quietly builds.

Gentle tips for January
• Lower the bar. Ease back into routines rather than expecting immediate productivity or motivation.
• Reconnect socially in small, meaningful ways.
• Rebuild your sleep and meal schedule with consistency, not perfection.
• Get outside when you can — even brief exposure to daylight can help.
• Talk early if your mood isn’t improving or begins to feel heavier.

If the post-holiday slump lingers longer than expected, Andrews Behavioral Health is here to support you. January is a season of transition — and you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Be there for someone after su***de loss

For those who have lost a loved one to su***de, the holidays can echo long after they’ve passed — no matter how much time has gone by. The quiet after gatherings, the return to routine, and the absence of familiar voices can make January especially heavy. Grief doesn’t reset just because a new year begins.

That’s why Andrews Behavioral Health works to support individuals and families long after the first days of grief have passed. Through our HEARTS LOSS Team, people with lived experience of su***de loss are trained to walk alongside others who are newly grieving.

LOSS Volunteers don’t offer answers or advice — they offer presence, understanding, and the assurance that no one has to navigate this road alone.

If you have experienced su***de loss and have ever wondered whether your story could help someone else, there is a safe and supported way to explore that possibility.

As we welcome a new year, I want to begin by wishing you peace, health, and renewed strength for the road ahead. January often arrives with mixed emotions — hope alongside heaviness, anticipation paired with reflection. At Andrews Behavioral Health, we understand that both can exist at the same time.

The work that happens at Andrews moves forward every day across our organization and the communities of the five counties we serve. It’s not about rushing forward — it’s about moving with purpose, one steady step at a time.

As we begin this new chapter, we’re grateful for the trust you place in us and for the people — our team, our partners, and our community members. All of you make our work possible.

And thank you to our Facebook followers. We look forward to continuing to share stories, insights, and resources with you throughout the year as we continue moving mountains together.

Wishing you a calm and hopeful start to 2026!

Today is about restore.

Restoration isn’t about fixing what’s broken.
It’s about replenishing what’s been spent.

💚 Restore your energy
💚 Restore your perspective
💚 Restore your sense of steadiness

You don’t have to rush into the new year feeling complete.
It’s okay to arrive still becoming. ⏳💚

Today is about reflection — not judgment.
Take a quiet moment and ask:

💚 What helped me get through this year?
💚 What did I learn about myself?
💚 What do I want more of in my life?

Reflection isn’t about replaying mistakes.
It’s about noticing your strength.

Many people who have experienced a su***de loss begin their journey in isolation, but as they move through the grief process, they come to understand how meaningful support from others can be. In fact, they may be wondering how they might offer that same support to someone just starting their grief journey.

If that thought has crossed your mind—even quietly—there is a safe and supported way to explore walking alongside someone facing this life-changing experience.

The HEARTS LOSS Team, hosted by Andrews Behavioral Health, offers a gentle and safe way for those with lived experience of su***de loss to support others on their path through grief. Trained LOSS (Local Outreach to Su***de Survivors) volunteers offer presence, understanding, and compassionate listening to individuals and families navigating life after a su***de death.

Volunteers may also include individuals working in the mental health field who are passionate about supporting others after a su***de loss.

This role is not about fixing or counseling. Our free, comprehensive training provides guidance, clear boundaries, and ongoing support for team members. Participation is always paced with care, personal sharing is never required, and stepping back is always respected.

As the year winds down, today is about release.

You don’t have to carry everything into the new year.

💚 We’re grateful for Mandy, our Employee of the Month 💚

When a fellow employee suddenly needed medical attention, Mandy Sherrod didn’t hesitate. She was the first to notice something was wrong and immediately alerted a supervisor and on-site provider, helping ensure quick care.

But she didn’t stop there. When the employee was transported by ambulance, Mandy chose to drive to the hospital so her coworker wouldn’t be alone during such a frightening moment. She stayed until family arrived—offering comfort, reassurance, and steady support when it mattered most.

Mandy, your quick response, genuine compassion, and unwavering dedication reflect the very heart of Andrews.

CEO Becki Mangum, at left, said "We’re proud to work alongside people like Mandy." 💚

🎓 Congratulations to Mari Gutierrez!

Mari Gutierrez, Director of Compliance and Clinical Outcomes at Andrews Behavioral Health, has recently completed her Master of Public Health (MPH) through University of Texas at Tyler’s Population Health Leadership and Analytics program in the School of Health Professions.

This training strengthens Andrews’ ability to better understand community needs, analyze population-level health trends, and improve services that support stronger mental health outcomes. When public health and community mental health work together, the result is better overall wellbeing for the individuals and families we serve.

We are excited to see already how Mari's skills at collecting and analyzing data concerning the community mental health needs of our service area are providing us with new insights. Her findings will help us better serve East Texas in the future. More to come on this soon ... stay tuned.

Please join us in congratulating Mari on this achievement! 💚
