🌙 Struggling with sleep? The answer might be in your mouth… literally.

Orofacial myofunctional therapy supports proper breathing, tongue posture, and muscle function — all of which play a major role in restful sleep. When the tongue rests low, the mouth stays open, or the airway isn’t supported, the body works harder at night than it should. This can lead to snoring, restlessness, mouth breathing, and even changes in facial growth in children.

✨ Through targeted exercises, myofunctional therapy helps:
🌬️ Encourage nasal breathing
👅 Promote stable tongue and lip posture
🌛 Improve airway support
😴 Reduce night-time restlessness
💨 Support more efficient oxygenation and deeper, restorative sleep

Healthy sleep starts with healthy function. When the muscles of the face, tongue, and airway work the way they’re designed to, the whole body benefits.

It’s also important to note that while myofunctional therapy can positively influence things like restlessness or even bedwetting because of improved breathwork and oral posture, it is not a direct treatment for those concerns. Many families benefit from a collaborative approach, working with additional allied health professionals to support the best outcome.

✨ This year’s IAOM conference was packed with valuable insights! From updated prevention strategies and early orthodontic approaches to the latest tongue-tie protocols—it was full of relevant, timely information. 💡 👅🦷

Dr Audrey Yoon always brings the best information and protocols for early orthodontic/airway intervention and treatment as well as Dr Baxter sharing his latest insights on tongue & lip tie protocols. Dr Sekiguchi from Japan discussing a holistic approach with myofunctional therapy.

I especially loved the focus on how myofunctional therapy plays a supportive role in each of these areas, helping create lasting results for children and adults alike. 🙌💙

✨ Understanding Compensations in Myofunctional Therapy ✨

At East Texas Orofacial Myology, success in therapy isn’t measured by how teeth shift—it’s about function, not alignment.

👄 When the tongue, lips, and facial muscles aren’t functioning properly, the body finds ways to compensate. That might look like mouth breathing, forward head posture, low tongue position, or even poor sleep. While it’s great to see changes in alignment, it’s not the goal. Muscles do influence bone. Supporting orthodontic goals is always a win win.

✅ Therapy goals are centered around:
🌬️ Nasal breathing – for better sleep, focus, and overall health
👄 Lip competence – lips gently closed at rest
👅 Proper tongue posture – resting fully on the palate, supporting healthy oral development

💡 A straighter smile may happen, but that’s just icing on the cake 🎂—not the purpose of myofunctional therapy.

🔹East Texas Orofacial Myology creates individualized therapy plans tailored to each client’s unique needs. No cookie-cutter programs—just intentional care.

😬 Teeth Grinding in Children is NOT Normal! 🚨

If your child grinds their teeth at night, it’s more than just a bad habit — it’s a red flag. 🚩
Teeth grinding (bruxism) can be a sign of airway insufficiency caused by:

👄 A small or narrow palate
👃 Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
🛏️ Sleep-disordered breathing

Grinding is the body’s way of signaling a struggle to breathe while sleeping — trying to open the airway. These powerful forces can wear down the teeth at the edges and even near the gumline, just like we see in adults.

‼️ Grinding is often one of the earliest signs of sleep-disordered breathing.
Early intervention is key!

A great place to start is 👉 East Texas Orofacial Myology 🧠👃💤
An evaluation can help identify early signs and symptoms that affect craniofacial growth, airway development, and long-term health. 🧒✅

With years of experience and a collaborative team approach, East Texas Orofacial Myology is here to help your child breathe, grow, and thrive.
