A tenaculum is a tool used to help grasp the cervix during GYN procedure such as endometrial biopsies, colposcopies, and IUD insertion’s. An alternative to the tenaculum is an Allis clamp.
The Tenaculum has sharp edges that pierce the cervix and the Allies has jagged teeth. Although they both look intense, I personally believe the tenaculum causes less damage to the cervix.
These tools are important because they help stabilize the cervix during procedures to help decrease the chance of further damage and uterine perforation.
Applying these tools can be significantly painful for some patients; therefore, pain management options should always be discussed and offered before any procedure! Some examples include topical, lidocaine, paracervical block, and oral anxiety/pain meds.
