Tomorrow, May 17th is world NEC awareness day.
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) causes inflammation and intestinal tissue death in babies with a premature gut.
NEC has an incidence of 2-13% with a mortality rate of up to 30%. The mortality rate increases to 50% in ELBW (extremely low birth weight) babies. Risk factors include formula feeding and breast milk fortification.
‘Breast milk components stimulate intestinal stem cell activity & promote intestinal epithelial cell viability both of which help prevent necrotizing enterocolitis.’ See more about this research by Hock et al. In the 2017 Journal of pediatric surgery.

One of the coolest things about working with the Mother's Milk Bank Northeast on our 2019 NIH funded human milk study was their amazing volunteers from a group called Moving Violations! Moving Violations is a team of women bikers who help transport mothers milk to those in need. One time they were willing to help us get fresh milk samples delivered-on their motorcycles! Unfortunately a big storm made that impossible for us. Later, they were the heroes in a one of the best stories of 2020 - check out the link in our bio! 📷 cred: Mothers Milk Bank NE.

Have you found any great nursing stations in your travels? This is the beautiful nursing room at the Boston MFA. I recently learned the Maine Fryeberg fair grounds has a great mother’s only nursing/changing station. Conveniently located next to security, the station is well marked for moms only. Inside the station was equipped with multiple curved changing pads, baby wipes and disposable changing pad covers, as well as rocking chairs and a bathroom. 👏 👏 👏

Breast feeding in front of young children can initially provoke curious questions. Once witnessed, most kids accept breastfeeding as part of raising a baby and child. As one mom, Olivia Hinebaugh, pointed out- “Later in life when it's time to latch their own babies or make other woman in their lives feel supported and comfortable, I hope their own comfort will be contagious.”

HAPPY NURSES DAY!!

Today you may be gifted a stale cookie, 15% off at the gift shop, a pen, a donation in your name, a badge tag, chapstick, but it’s most likely a slice of pizza 🍕 or nothing . To the OB and NICU RN’s running to unfamiliar departments to deliver babies from critically ill covid + moms. The Neuro nurses taking care of covid CVA’s. The ED nurses balancing surges while trying to accommodate a year of pedi psychiatric crisis. Home health nurses trying to fashion decon from the trunk of their car. The school nurses trying to teach proper hand washing to a school system with no soap in their dispensers. The travelers showing up and jumping in. The nurses working night shift and going home exhausted to educate their kids. All the nurses displaced and thrown into ICU’s, vaccine clinics, ID clinics, RIC clinics and ED’s. And the retired nurses who made their nurse family members chicken pot pie so they could eat a good meal after their horrible shifts... THANK YOU.

Our work worlds were rocked this year and we learned making history is exhausting. Short staffed, heartsick, covid sick, afraid, assaulted for wearing scrubs in public. The worries never ended.
But- we stood together, we showed up day after day. We cried ALOT. We prayed, hoped and dreamed of an end to these working conditions. We continued to support each other. It’s not over, while we wait, slap some more healing ointment on your nose- making a mark on history is better than your nose.

Did you know breastmilk can be different colors depending on what has been consumed? Pink, blue, yellow, green, or orange! Best part- this milk is still safe to use!

Tiny Toes Tuesday!
Two babies- two different birth stories.
One baby born prematurely and requiring a NICU admission, the other baby born full term and discharged two days later. Both babies required breast milk. The premature baby for an immature gut. The full term baby for a food allergy the mother was able to recognize through her own intake and subsequent breastmilk.
