Did you know that constipation affects around 20% of people in the United States? It's true! Constipation is a common and often frustrating digestive condition characterized by infrequent bowel movements, dry or hard stool, difficulty or pain passing stools or a sensation of incomplete evacuation. It can often be accompanied by abdominal discomfort, bloating and straining during bowel movements.

Constipation can have serious negative effects on ones' quality of life if it's not properly addressed. The good news is that there are many natural and effective ways to help relieve constipation.

Here are some of our natural recommendation to help provide relief for constipation:

1. Get moving- physical activity can stimulate bowel movements and improve overall digestive health.

2. Hydrate- drinking plenty of water will help soften stool and facilitate an easier passage.

3. Eat a fiber-rich diet- increasing your intake of fruits, vegetables and whole grains will help promote regular bowel movements.

4. Probiotics- foods like yogurt or supplements can promote a healthy gut flora and improve digestion.

5. Establish a routine- create a consistent daily routine for meals and bathroom breaks to regulate bowel habits. Don't ignore your body's signal to go!

6. Magnesium Citrate- this is a natural supplement that is used as a laxative to help relieve constipation.

7. Drink a hot beverage- consuming a hot beverage like coffee, tea or water with lemon and honey can help speed up digestive motility. Try this in the morning when your bowels are most active!

8. Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy- this type of therapy helps with enhancing coordination and relaxation of muscles involved in bowel movements. Pelvic PT will also teach you proper bowel habits, postures, belly massages and exercises to help improve constipation.

Did you know that carbonated drinks like seltzer water, soda and bubbly drinks can irritate your bladder? It's true! The acidity of these drinks can irritate the sensitive lining of the bladder, leading to more discomfort and increased urgency to urinate. Drinks and products with artificial sweeteners can also be irritating to the bladder.

Other bladder irritants can include smoking, caffeinated beverages (coffee, tea and energy drinks), alcohol, chocolate, tomatoes, vinegar, spices and spicy foods, and citrus fruits and juices.

It's important to note that individual responses to these irritants can vary, and managing bladder health often involves identifying and avoiding specific triggers based on personal sensitivity.

Want to learn more about ways to decrease bladder irritation? Come see us! Treating bladder pain is one of our many specialties! 😊

What is the number one exercise a pelvic floor therapist recommends? It's not a kegel!

It's deep diaphragmatic breathing! Breathing through your belly, instead of your chest, is an extremely effective way to engage the diaphragm, connect with your pelvic floor muscles and promote relaxation.

Studies have shown that deep breathing can reduce stress, lower anxiety, lower blood pressure, decrease pain and facilitate relaxation. It can also help with incontinence!

Give it a try and let us know how you feel. Need help learning how to do it? Come see us!
