I remember when I was in third grade, I was always doing something. My body’s always revving. My teacher would always allow us to play on the playground, and when she’d say, “Come on, kids! Everybody get in!” I was always the last one in. I wanted to have as much play time as possible.
One time I was way behind, like five minutes behind. She was struggling to get me inside. She looked down at me and said, “Phil, when you grow up, do you want to work or do you want to play?” I was a people pleaser. I looked at all of my teachers with respect, and I tried to give her the answer I thought she would want. So I said, “I want to play.” She looked at me with disappointment and said, “I thought you’d say that.”
That response impacted me so much that I made it my mission to never work a day in my life. To this day, that has been my greatest success. To never work a day in my life. Everything I do is all about fun. Now, it’s not that I don’t work. I’m grinding every single day, and I’m moving the needle every single day. However, that statement impacted me so much that I made it my greatest mission to never really, really work. And I say to this day, it’s been my greatest success.
