🐦🕊️ A New “Flock” arrives at the Union Grove Home 🕊️🐦
This winter, members welcomed a “flock” of new residents to the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Homes! Aviaries - each housing 4–6 birds - were installed in the dining areas of each of the four units of the Union Grove Home, bringing new activity into these shared spaces.

Aviaries offer many benefits, including:
• Emotional Well-being: Companionship that helps ease loneliness and anxiety
• Cognitive Stimulation: Encourages memory and mental engagement
• Social Interaction: Creates natural gathering and conversation spaces
• Sensory Enrichment: Engages sight and sound, especially for those with dementia or limited mobility
• Connection to Nature: Brings the outdoors inside for those unable to go outside

🎨Highlights from the Member Art Show at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove🎨

As part of its Valentine’s Day celebrations, our Home hosted an Art Show that featured the works of more than a dozen of its talented members. The show, which exhibited works created during watercolor painting, open art, and woodshop activities, are a reflection of the creativity and dedication of our members.

According to Union Grove’s Activity Director and Volunteer Coordinator, Dana Kugler, member art fairs like this have become a highlight in recent years, offering members an opportunity to share their talents and passions with others.

Visitors to the art fair included fellow Union Grove members, staff, and volunteers, as well as Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) Secretary James Bond and Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs Member Pat Beggs, who were at the Home to celebrate the Valentine’s Day weekend. The event was a wonderful way to honor both the holiday and the artistic spirit of our members. 💕🎉

Meet Sara Schroeder, our highlighted employee of the month for February 2026 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove! Sara is a Nurse Clinician 2 and presently the AM Charge Nurse at our Home. She has been an important member of the skilled care team since November 2014.

For Sara, she says the most rewarding part of her role is working closely with veterans, their families, and her colleagues. She values being part of members’ everyday lives and takes pride in the strong rapport she has built with both members and staff. Sara’s advice to her fellow employees: “Treat all members as if they were your family. Always remember this is customer service at an elite level.”

While not a veteran herself, Sara comes from a family with a strong military background, including service in the Army and Air Force. Outside of work, she enjoys traveling - taking cruises and visiting a new state each year (especially checking out restaurants featured on the TV show ‘Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives’ during her travels).

Recently, in December 2025, Sara was recognized as one of WDVA’s Employees of the Quarter for her outstanding service and commitment to veterans in her role with the Department.

Please join us in recognizing Sara for her commitment to caring for our veterans at Union Grove!

This month, we’re proud to welcome Shelley Dern as the new Health Services Nursing Coordinator for the Wisconsin Veterans Homes at Chippewa Falls, King, and Union Grove! She holds a master’s degree in nursing (MSN) and brings 4 decades of healthcare experience to our Homes.

For Shelley, the most rewarding part of her career has always been the human connection and profound yet straightforward moments, from seeing a smile to hearing a patient say, “I am so glad you are taking care of me today.”

Her experience as a regional nurse, nursing home administrator, director of nursing, nursing instructor, and certified legal nursing consultant brings another layer of expertise to our organization. This position is a new role for WDVA, and she will work to elevate our care delivery processes.

Through her experience working with patients, Shelley says it has helped her become an effective advocate for their needs. She shares that it is now a privilege to give back and provide care for our members who have put their lives on the line for our country.

While not a veteran herself, Shelley has deep military ties. For nearly two decades, she was the spouse of an Air Force service member whose service included an overseas assignment to Hahn Air Base in Germany. While living in Germany, Shelley founded “Stripes and Patches to Go,” a sewing business that supported the MWR Recreation Department at Hahn Air Base by sewing military stripes and patches.
Other members of her family with military service include her father (Air Force), brother (Army), three uncles, and her son-in-law, who is in the Army National Guard and was recently deployed overseas.

Shelley is currently serving as the acting director of nursing for our veterans home in Union Grove until the ideal candidate is hired. In this new role, she will onboard nursing supervisors and maintain continuity across campuses through policy, audits, mock surveys, and more.

Please join us in welcoming Shelly to our WDVA team!
