Coping with the death of someone you care about may be one of the hardest challenges you face, and not just in terms of your emotional health. The fact is, grief can negatively affect your physical health as well.

Weakened immune system
Your immune system protects your body against things that can make you sick. The experience of grief can actually impact the immune system. In one study, older adults who had lost a loved one had weakened immune systems compared with those who had not suffered a loss.
A weakened immune system may also lead to illness and infections. A study showed that 249 people who lost an infant or child reported a total of 404 acute illnesses during the first year after the death. The most frequent were colds and flu, headaches, anxiety, infections, depression, and angina (severe chest pains).
Grief after the loss of a loved one is normal, and the grieving process may take some time. If you decide that you need help overcoming your grief, reach out to your doctor or mental health professional for support.

“Black history is not a moment. It’s a movement — a constant reminder that freedom, truth, and dignity are worth fighting for every day.”
“We honor the lives, the legacy, and the enduring strength of those who came before us. Their courage shaped our communities, and their faith carried generations forward.”

Envy may arise when observing those who haven't experienced grief, as their daily challenges seem insignificant compared to the profound pain of losing a loved one. Acknowledge this feeling without letting it overshadow your thoughts, as over time, you will grow less raw and develop acceptance towards death and loss, even though it leaves an indelible mark on your spirit.

"I know now that we never get over great losses; we absorb them, and they carve us into different, often kinder, creatures. ...We tell the story to get them back, to capture the traces of footfalls through the snow."

Thoughtful Planning for Handling a Loved One’s Belongings

Take time to plan how you will go through your loved one’s possessions. Gather close family members and discuss which items should stay within the family and what can be donated to those in need. Consider who should be involved in the process—having two or three people can help things move smoothly while minimizing conflicts. Most importantly, don’t feel pressured to rush. Give yourself grace as you navigate this step. 💙
