During Black History Month, we honor Brad Lomax — a disability and civil rights activist who helped connect the movements for racial justice and disability justice. He participated in the historic 504 Sit-in, which led to federal anti-discrimination protections, and worked to advance accessibility, equal rights, and inclusion for people with disabilities.

Several individuals we serve enjoyed visiting the Akron History Center. This free, museum-quality exhibit welcomes visitors and inspires residents by highlighting the history and impact of the Akron community. Outings like this provide meaningful engagement, encourage learning, and create shared experiences for the individuals we serve.

During Black History Month, we honor Lois Curtis — a powerful advocate and woman with intellectual and developmental disabilities whose courage changed lives across the nation. As the lead plaintiff in Olmstead v. L.C., her case secured the right for people with disabilities to receive services in community settings instead of being institutionalized. Because of her bravery, adults with developmental disabilities today have greater access to independence, inclusion, and the opportunity to live in their communities. Her voice sparked change. Her legacy continues to impact lives every single day.
