It’s back to school - and the start of school sports. For your athletes who want contact lenses, Extreme H2O 14.8 is a great solution. July 12 is National Different Colored Eyes Day. This characteristic is called heterochromia, and while it occurs in humans, it is much more commonly seen in animals.

So, why is this? Because animals are commonly known to breed within their own gene pool. So, if two cats from the same litter share the gene for heterochromia and they then mate and produce offspring, the offspring is more likely to carry on the trait.

Inbreeding is very rare in humans so the trait is typically masked by more dominant genes. However, if two individuals with heterochromia were to produce offspring, the chances for an offspring with heterochromia are much higher.

According the that National Institutes of Health, fewer than 200,000
Americans have complete heterochromia – approximately six out of every 10,000 people.

July 4th is days away - a great time to spark up a convo about eye safety.

While fireworks are part of the holiday festivities, they can cause injuries when not handled safely. Over the next few days, take the time to educate your patients on the best way to prevent injuries during the firework season.

SOME EYE SAFETY TIPS:
**View fireworks from a safe distance of at least 500 feet
away.
**If a firework doesn't explode - leave it on the ground
**Never let young children play with fireworks (35% of those
who get injured are under the age of 15)
**If lighting fireworks, always wear protective eye-wear
**If you experience an injury, get medical attention right away
