-The Splenius muscle is one of the many muscles that is located along a horses neck. Youโll find that this muscle begins at the top of the horses poll and ends mid wither.
๐ ๊ฐแดษดแดแดษชแดษด:
Its function is to elevate, flex laterally, extend, and stabilize the head and neck!
๐ ๊ฑสแดแดแดแดแด๊ฑ แด๊ฐ แดแดษชษด:
In my experience working on this muscle, Iโve found that horses with a sore Splenius muscle will present with symptoms such as poll sensitivity, moving their head/neck away from pressure, head tossing, or owners have mentioned under saddle that their horse is stiff or reluctant to flex one way or the other. Some horses are more reactive than others!

Various reasons can cause soreness within this muscle. For example, over use or prolonged lateral flexion which can lead to strains, over compensation, or type of discipline/rider. Without this muscle functioning properly your horse cannot feel or perform at its very best!

Happy Muscle Monday, I hope I can keep up to post weekly and share my knowledge so that owners can be aware of the symptoms and know when their horse is ready for bodywork. ๐ฅณ
