Rolfing Structural Integration, now available in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan
By Jeffrey Kinnunen, M.S. Certified Rolfer, ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiologist
We proudly offer Rolfing Structural Integration as a new wellness service here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. That sounds interesting, you might say, but what exactly does that mean?
In brief, this is Structural Integration explained, (or at least I will try). Structural Integration is a system of manual therapy and movement therapy. It consists of interventions that are intended to promote more functional movement throughout the whole body. I use the term Rolfing Structural Integration because I trained and was certified at the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute in Boulder, Colorado. Dr. Rolf “Invented” structural integration, but it has roots in a tradition of osteopathic medicine, and the interventions are often reflective of this. There are other schools of Structural Integration, that branched off from Rolfing. I’m not saying that any school is better or worse, just that I attended the original.
Rolfing Structural Integration, or just “Rolfing” utilizes a continuum of contact from no contact- movement therapy, to slight contact- such as body tracking, up to deep tissue contact. The deep tissue contact is kind of like a massage performed without massage oil. Rolfing isn’t massage though. I’ll give you the analogy that a blueberry is kind of like a tomato. One is not better than the other; they serve different purposes.
A typical session involves assessment and treatment with intervention using the continuum of contact that I described. The client is an active participant in the process. The Rolfing process is meant to engage the client through awareness of their own body. Physiological and psychological variables affect how you experience your body, and the way your body functions. The practitioner is there to help you understand and improve these variables. Your body is not “Broken” and it doesn’t need to be “Fixed.” Your body is a brilliant, self-regulating machine that heals itself. Sometimes, though, it needs a little help.
Can Structural Integration be done safely while wearing a mask? Yes. Right now the client and the practitioner both wear a mask. I absolutely will do everything in my ability to keep you safe in the office.
