Such an interesting post! Diet matters!!!
17% of the calories in the typical U.S. diet come from refined vegetable oil (seed oils). These foods are the major sources of omega-6 fatty acids in our diet & are the primary reason why the western diet causes a pro-inflammatory profile that adversely influences the cytokines involved in acne.
Refined vegetable oils contain too much omega 6 fats & too little omega-3 fats, thereby promoting excess inflammation through an inflammatory hormone called IL-1 alpha, which can cause skin cells to stick together & block the pore.
Eating processed seed oils like soybean oil, canola oil, shortening (Crisco), hydrogenated oils, corn oil, margarine, sunflower oil, & safflower oil, will cause clogged pores.
Most of these vegetable oils are in processed foods, margarines, spreads, & cooking oils.
The average omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid balance in the U.S. diet is 10:1 - too high in inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids which compete with anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids. The ideal ratio is about 2:1.
A "healthy" person has about 2% of PUFA (omega 6) in their body fat on average, however, people eating a SAD standard American diet may contain as much as 30% of PUFA in their body fat.
Higher than normal levels of PUFAs can lead to bodily inflammation & reduced energy, which, in turn, can contribute to clogged pores among other things.
If you do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon or other fatty fish, your diet will be more pro-inflammatory than anti-inflammatory.
Vegan diets, paleo diets, & even simple "health-conscious" diets consisting of chicken & salads with vegetable oils can be high in omega 6s.
Poultry products have become the main source of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA), the omega 6 type. Most grain-fed chickens contain a high percentage of omega 6 fatty acids. All chickens are fed grain. Even the ones allowed access to pasture are supplemented with grain. Chicken meat has a higher PUFA content in comparison to beef.
