Foot pain isn’t always just about your feet.

Because your feet rely heavily on healthy circulation, nerve function, and tissue repair, they’re often one of the first places systemic conditions show up. Issues like diabetes, thyroid disorders, vascular disease, and autoimmune conditions can all present with foot symptoms.

If your foot pain feels unusual, affects both feet, or isn’t improving with basic care, it may be time to look deeper.

Learn when foot pain could signal something more - and what to do next.

You know the one.

That first step out of bed that makes you question everything. 😅

Morning heel pain is often caused by plantar fasciitis - inflammation of the ligament that supports your arch.

If your heel hurts when you wake up but loosens up as you move, that’s not something to ignore.

Early treatment can prevent long-term foot pain and chronic inflammation.

Plantar fasciitis… or just tight calves?

Dr. Keeter explains how calf tightness can directly contribute to heel pain.

When your calf muscles are tight, they limit ankle mobility. That increased tension places extra strain on the plantar fascia - the ligament that supports your arch - leading to inflammation and sharp heel pain, especially in the morning.

Common signs include:
✔️ Pain with your first steps out of bed
✔️ Tightness in the back of the leg
✔️ Heel pain after activity
✔️ Limited ankle flexibility

Sometimes the root cause isn’t just in your foot - it starts higher up.

If you’re dealing with persistent heel pain in Smyrna or Middle Tennessee, we can help identify the source and create a treatment plan.

Nurses spend 8–12+ hours a day on their feet. The right shoes matter.

Dr. Neuhaus shares what to look for when choosing the best shoes for nurses:

✔️ Proper arch support
✔️ Shock-absorbing midsoles
✔️ Stable heel counter
✔️ Wide, supportive toe box
✔️ Slip-resistant outsole
✔️ Removable insoles (for custom orthotics if needed)

Long shifts on hard hospital floors can contribute to plantar fasciitis, heel pain, arch strain, Achilles tendonitis, and even knee or back discomfort.

Supportive footwear is not just about comfort - it’s about injury prevention.

If you’re a nurse in Middle Tennessee dealing with foot or ankle pain, we’re here to help.

Not all shoes are created equal - especially for diabetic feet.

Dr. Neuhaus explains why proper footwear is critical for patients with diabetes. Reduced sensation (neuropathy), circulation issues, and pressure points can increase the risk of ulcers, wounds, and infection.

The right diabetic shoes should:
✔️ Have a wide, protective toe box
✔️ Minimize seams to reduce friction
✔️ Provide depth for custom inserts
✔️ Offer strong arch and heel support
✔️ Protect against pressure and breakdown

If you have diabetes and are experiencing numbness, tingling, calluses, or slow-healing wounds, proper footwear isn’t optional - it’s preventative care.

When an entire practice steps away from clinic for a full day, it’s not just for a meeting. It’s for growth.

On Friday, the Neuhaus Foot & Ankle team gathered in Nashville for our annual Momentum Conference - a day dedicated to learning, laughing, stretching ourselves, and strengthening the way we serve our patients.

This year’s theme was simple, but powerful:
BE THE REASON.

Be the reason a patient feels heard.
Be the reason someone walks without pain again.
Be the reason a teammate feels supported.

Our tagline said it best:
Commit to the team. Be thoughtful. Make an impact.

From team-building exercises to meaningful conversations about elevating the patient experience, every moment reinforced why we do what we do. Excellence in medicine doesn’t happen by accident - it happens when a team commits to showing up better every single day.

We’re energized. We’re aligned. And we’re ready to make an even greater impact in the communities we serve.

Working in podiatry, nothing surprises you… until it does.

We asked our doctors: “What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever pulled out of a foot?”
Let’s just say… shoes aren’t the only thing your feet carry. 👀

Foot injuries, foreign objects, and infections can happen to anyone. If you’re dealing with pain, swelling, or something that doesn’t belong - don’t wait.

Your feet deserve expert care.

Heel pain that’s worst in the morning is rarely random.

One of the most common causes of heel pain is plantar fasciitis or inflammation of the plantar fascia, the thick band of tissue that supports your arch. Overnight, it can tighten, which is why those first steps out of bed often feel sharp or intense.

It may improve as you move throughout the day… but that doesn’t mean it’s gone.

Recurring morning heel pain is a pattern and patterns usually have a cause.

The good news? When plantar fasciitis is diagnosed and treated early, recovery is often faster and more manageable.

If heel pain is part of your daily routine, it doesn’t have to be.
