Merry Christmas, Kansas City!

As the city slows down and homes fill with warmth, we just want to take a moment to say something simple and sincere...

Thank you, KC.
For another year of trusting our family with your lawns, your trees, and the places where your life happens.

This season has a way of reminding us what really matters -
the glow of a porch light,
the laughter inside a living room,
the comfort of coming home after a long day.

All year long, you’ve welcomed our team into those spaces.
You waved from driveways, called with questions, shared stories, and supported a local, family-run business through another season of growth.
We don’t take that lightly, and we never will.

So from all of us - the crews in the trucks, the arborists on the ropes, the folks who answer your calls, and the family behind the name - we wish you a Christmas full of peace, joy, and moments that feel like home.

May your trees stand strong,
your lawns rest easy,
and your holidays be filled with all the things that matter most.

Merry Christmas, Kansas City.
We’re grateful for you - today and every day.

Today marks the shortest day of the year - and the quiet turning point where the light begins its return.

For lawns and trees, winter isn’t about stopping. It’s about rest, resilience, and preparation. Beneath frozen ground and bare branches, roots are conserving energy, storing nutrients, and strengthening for the seasons ahead.

What looks still is anything but.

This is the season when smart care matters most:
• Protecting roots from temperature swings
• Preventing salt damage near driveways and sidewalks
• Letting landscapes rest without unnecessary stress

Winter teaches patience - and reminds us that growth always starts underground.

Here’s to the long nights, the returning light, and landscapes built to last.

We love a beautifully lit holiday yard - but the last thing your trees want is a season of stress under all that sparkle.

A few simple decorating habits keep your lights shining and your trees healthy:

- Skip wrapping lights too tightly - tight cords restrict growth and damage bark
- Never use nails, screws, or anything that pierces the trunk - those wounds invite pests and disease
- Remove lights soon after the holidays - don’t leave them up year-round where they can girdle branches
- Choose lightweight LED strands to reduce pressure on young or flexible limbs
- Your trees want to get festive - just not at the expense of their health.

A little care now keeps your holiday bright and your trees strong for many seasons to come.

Employee Spotlight: Meet Rider (aka Amy!)
Tree Technician | Tree Doctor Team

Brains, boots, heart, and a whole lot of green-thumb energy - Rider brings it all.

With a B.S. in Horticulture (Landscape & Turf Management) from Kansas State University, Amy’s roots in plant science run deep. She sharpened her skills hands-on at the K-State Gardens, then carried that expertise into the field with Davey Tree and Loma Vista Nursery before joining the Martz Bros Tree Doctor team.

Why we trust her with your trees:
• ~8 years of industry experience
• KS 3A & 3B Commercial Applicator License
• MO 3 Commercial Applicator License
• Certified for ornamental tree & lawn applications in KS & MO
• Active member of ISA, KAA, and TCIA (with more certifications in progress)

But that’s just the work side...

Outside the job, Rider is:
• A mom of two energetic boys
• An avid gardener
• A city council member
• A volunteer for school gardens and neighborhood beautification projects

In other words, she doesn’t just care for landscapes… she cares for communities.

We’re proud to have Amy Rider helping protect, strengthen, and sustain the trees of Kansas City - one root system at a time.

Snow Load: What It Means for Your Trees

Kansas City winters don’t hold back - and neither does heavy, wet snow. We've already had our first decent storm, and it's not likely to be our last.

When snow piles up on branches, the weight can double or triple in minutes… and that’s when trees start to bend, crack, or break.

Before the next storm rolls in, here’s what to watch for:
- Evergreens bending or drooping - they carry the most snow because needles hold moisture.
- Weak or overextended limbs - especially on ornamentals and young trees.
- V-shaped branch unions - narrow connections split first under pressure.
- Deadwood hidden in the canopy - it snaps fastest and falls farthest.

If you notice your trees straining after a snowfall, resist the urge to shake branches - that can cause even more breakage. Let the snow melt naturally and keep an eye out for cracks or hanging limbs.

A quick winter inspection now can prevent a messy (and expensive) storm clean-up later.

Our certified arborists are here to help KC trees stand strong all season long.

Today is National Christmas Tree Day!
This recent weather means it's probably a good time for a refresher on keeping your evergreens safe from snow load, salt spray, and winter burn.

‘Tis the season when evergreens steal the spotlight - glowing with lights, holding down the yard, standing tall through every icy whisper of December. But even the toughest trees feel winter’s weight.

A few simple steps can keep them healthy and vibrant long after the ornaments come down:

Snow Load:
Gently brush heavy snow upward off branches - never downward, which can snap limbs. Avoid using shovels or anything stiff that could damage needles.

Salt Spray:
If your trees sit near driveways or streets, rinse them off on warmer days and consider a burlap wrap or barrier to keep salty slush from burning needles.

Winter Burn:
Dry winter winds pull moisture from foliage. Mulch the base to help retain soil moisture, and water during mild spells when the ground isn’t frozen.

Healthy evergreens don’t just survive winter - they stay beautiful all year long.

Here’s to keeping your outdoor “Christmas trees” merry, bright, and thriving.

Looking Ahead: Your Winter Lawn & Tree Watchlist

As November wraps up, your lawn may look quiet - but winter is when the real test begins.

A few small things to keep an eye on over the next couple of months can make a big difference once spring rolls around:

- Watch the salt. Ice melt along sidewalks and driveways can burn turf. Try to keep products off the grass when you can.
- Mind the snow piles. Repeatedly dumping snow in the same spot can compact soil and smother the lawn underneath.
- Check where you park. Avoid driving or parking on frozen turf - it can crush crowns and leave bare ruts later.
- Glance up after storms. Heavy snow or ice on branches can reveal cracks or broken limbs that need attention.

You don’t have to babysit your yard all winter - just give it a quick check after big weather days and make note of any trouble spots.

And if you’d like a fresh start lined up for spring, now’s a great time to get on the schedule for a 2026 lawn or tree health plan.

While we’re recovering from leftovers, your lawn’s recovering from fall stress.

The freeze-thaw cycle can be tough on roots - but keeping the soil healthy, hydrated, and nutrient-rich helps protect your grass through winter dormancy.
If you haven’t scheduled your late-fall soil treatment, now’s your last call before the ground locks up.

Your lawn deserves a little post-feast care, too. Give us a shout!
