I was walking my dog Coco at Golden Gate Park on Sunday and unexpectedly ran into a humpback whale. This wonderful surprise stopped us in our tracks. I just had to share it with you.

Ok. It was not a real humpback whale but it was the actual size of one.

This installation was created by Rueben Rude for the JFK Promenade Golden Mile project. "Roads don't sprout whales. But Golden Miles magically do."

I love marine animals and was so delighted to see this "Street Whale" in the middle of the park. This art piece was designed to bring joy to pedestrians, help calm cyclists from going too fast, and be a safe haven for parents and toddlers to relax. Go to goldenmileproject.org to learn more.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wishing you more pleasant surprises that bring you joy, the ability to slow down and a safe haven to relax this holiday.

I used to be a fast eater. As a bodyworker I’ve spent years slamming food down between appointments to get me through the day. Now the act of eating quickly has become more commonplace for most people.

The reality is..

Fast eating does put a strain on our digestive system. Over time that will wear down our gut function.

Do you eat while
~Watching TV?
~Working on the computer?
~Scrolling though your phone?

If so, then perhaps you too slam your food down without even realizing it?

Did you know that slowing down our eating helps prevent indigestion, bloating and gas? When we take our time to chew this allows the enzymes from our saliva to properly break down our food. This makes it easier on our stomach and better assists our body in absorbing nutrients.

Slowing down my social eating was easy. The difficulty was learning how to slow down during the work hours. That’s where my autopilot tends to kick in. I have to consciously set myself up before beginning a meal or snack. I do this by..

1. Pausing and giving thanks. I take a moment to appreciate the food in front of me and acknowledge that it truly is a gift.

2. Timing the meal. I look at the clock and give myself at least 20 minutes. I won’t let myself finish before that time. Which makes me slow down how frequently I put a bite in my mouth.

3. Breathing. The quickest way to get me out of work mode/autopilot eating is by taking slow breaths. I do this after I’ve swallowed my food and before I take another bite. This is a sure way to bring me back to mindful eating.

This is still an ongoing practice but I’m moving away from my fast paced eating tendencies and stepping into a slower approach. I’m now more mindfully connected with my body while I eat. My gut feels stronger and healthier each day. Which brings me more peace and enjoyment at meal times.

Speaking of being mindfully connected. A BLACK FRIDAY SALE is coming. Breathe With Me: Single Session will be only $99! Book between Nov 28th - Dec 5th to get the deal.

Too cool to cool down?

What I see time and time again is that people often skip their warm ups and cool downs when exercising. How do I know? Because they end up on my table with pain or an injury. Look, I get that many of us are limited with personal time especially when we have a ton of responsibilities.

But it’s not about limited time.

It's about a frame of mind.

Instead of compartmentalizing warm up, exercise and cool down,

Think to yourself..

Warm up, exercise and cool down are ALL Part of doing a WORKOUT.

Warm Up = Body Preparation
Exercise = Body Exertion
Cool Down = Body Recovery
Here’s an example: ,

60 mins workout = 10 min warm up, 40 min exercise, 10 min cool down.

Et voilà.

Obviously the time breakdowns can be adjusted according to the goals of your exercise.

Just remember why we do these.

The purpose of a warm up is to prevent injury by heating up the muscles, loosening up the joints and increasing blood flow. This is usually done through movements to activate the targeted areas that will be performing the more intense exercise.

The purpose of a cool down is to help the body recover after exercise. This is usually done by stretching the performing muscles and taking slow and steady breaths to safely bring the heart rate down. This promotes flexibility, muscle repair and transitioning the body back to a resting state.

Be more like my dog Coco. It’s cool to be injury free.

Because nothing gets under their skin. Ha!

But being flesh and bones it’s inevitable for things to get under our skin. That’s part of the human experience.

I just lived through a real scare with my dog Coco. Where she had a foxtail lurking beneath her skin. That menace burrowed deep into her paw, got infected and then had to be surgically removed. After a month of nursing her, I'm happy to report she is now able to run and play again.

Having something under my dog’s skin definitely got under my skin. I had to figure out how to manage myself while figuring out how to manage her. Whenever my frustrations surfaced I used my breath to help me release the angst.

It amazes me that in those very moments conscious breathing could still bring me some peace at times I’d feel at a loss. Thankfully my breath training moved me through.
Are you caretaking for a loved one? Are you at a loss for things you can’t control? Your breath can pull you through. I’ll show you how.

As a bodywork practitioner I often treat people living with chronic stress. Their nervous system is always on high alert yelling out to them “mayday, mayday” but they can no longer hear those cries. They become numb to the physiological symptoms of high stress such as; low energy, difficulty concentrating, trouble sleeping and aches in the body. This high alert becomes their new normal. It becomes their base line of functioning. Which makes it hard for them to distinguish if they are managing their stress well. Until their body sends them an SOS. Or in my client Barbara’s case, gets fed up with the hectic, sick, painful life she was living.

When we gain the ability to calm our sympathetic “fight or flight” responses we can then learn to regulate our nervous system. The results are better sleep, better energy and better immune function to recover from injuries and combat diseases.

Is your body craving it?

Let me bring you moments of calm with the Power Under Pressure (PUP) Virtual Breath Training Program. With PUP your breath will turn into an easy automatic coping mechanism to quickly destress and reset. Wishing you moments of calm, moments of peace, and moments of more ease.

Warmly,
Denise
