Assignment operator (=) is called to assign an (already initialized) object to another object of the same class. By default, such assignment is performed by memberwise (AKA copy) assignment- each value (data member) of the object on the right (of the =) is assigned to the data member in the object on the left.

Copy constructor is called to create a new object from an existing object. The copy constructor copies (initializes) the original object's values into the new object. A copy constructor may be called when an object is passed to or returned from a function by value ( a copy of the object is passed/returned) or when an object is constructed based on an object of the same class.
