As millions of families navigate holiday celebrations with food allergies — whether starting eight nights of Hanukkah tonight, attending school and work celebrations, traveling, prepping for pre-during-and-post Christmas and New Year cheer, and embracing your college student's homecoming with extra gratitude today — we see you. 🩵 Through all the pre-planning, packing, explaining ingredients, and staying aware, you’re doing an amazing job keeping safe AND finding the joy in the season.
➡Here are our favorite tips to make this winter feel easier.
- When traveling, pack extra snacks you can trust, keep double doses of emergency epinephrine in your carry-on (do not allow it to be gate-checked), and have contingency plans in the event of lost luggage or an unexpected layover.
- While hand sanitizer may help fend off seasonal germs, it is not an effective cleaning agent for allergenic food proteins, soap and water are the best defense. Liquid soap, bar soap and commercial wipes are most effective at removing allergens from hands and common surfaces.
- Know how to recognize the signs of an allergic reaction and always have 2 doses of emergency epinephrine, like EpiPen®, Auvi-Q®, or the nasal spray Neffy®, easily accessible to urgently treat anaphylaxis.
- If you are actively being treated with oral immunotherapy (OIT), ensure that your allergist has provided you with a clear plan of action for dosing if you encounter seasonal illnesses, particularly fevers, coughs, and stomach bugs.
Wishing every food allergy family comfort, connection, and calm this winter.
