After a life-changing cancer diagnosis, Chris Wellman faced a long and difficult road to recovery. Surgeons removed nearly three-quarters of his esophagus along with surrounding lymph nodes.

Following six days in the hospital and two months relying on a feeding tube, Chris lost more than 40 pounds and much of his strength. Once an avid golfer and active contractor, he found himself weak, uncertain and unable to do many of the things he loved.

When Chris began our ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation program at our NovaCare Rehabilitation in Partnership with AtlantiCare center in Northfield, New Jersey, he described himself as “a shell” of who he once was. But with the help of our physical therapists, that changed.

Together, they focused on building endurance, regaining strength and restoring confidence, with a clear goal in mind: getting back on the golf course.

“About four weeks in, I started to feel like, ‘I got this,’” Chris said.

Today, Chris continues to rebuild his strength and has returned to hitting golf balls at the driving range, a milestone he once thought was far away.

“I have not reached my goals yet, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Chris said.

A routine mammogram showed that Tara Pearce had breast cancer. She had always kept up with her mammograms because both her mother and grandmother had faced the disease. Now, it was her turn. As she made appointments with her doctors, she felt a mix of shock, fear and uncertainty.

In preparation for her mastectomy, further imaging confirmed that she also had pancreatic cancer. With a change in plans and course of treatment, the surgeries began. Within a two-week period, she had part of the pancreas removed, a lumpectomy and three positive lymph nodes taken out. Tara is bravely looking ahead with chemotherapy, radiation and a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction in her future.

When Tara began experiencing discomfort due to seromas, she scheduled an appointment at Select Physical Therapy in Jenks with Physical Therapist Shannon Allison. Shannon, a ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation clinician, had the experience, training and reputation to manage the seromas with compression and lymphatic massages. Additionally, Tara is being treated for bilateral neuropathy, a common side effect of chemotherapy.

Described as an absolute warrior and fighter, Tara is coping, healing and fighting every day. She uses physical therapy to manage the setbacks, heal and come out stronger on the other side of cancer. Shannon and the team are there to guide and support Tara as she works hard to get back to what she loves.

No one wants to hear the words, "you have cancer."

Tracy Fronko was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024 and was quickly facing a world of fear and uncertainty. She had to schedule appointments, learn about different doctors, attend consultations and plan for treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, medications and physical therapy. All of this became her new, overwhelming reality. On top of that, she also had to deal with the side effects of these treatments.

Tracy’s side effects led her to see Megan Storm, ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation Program Director and a physical therapist. Tracy had first heard Megan speak at a Project 31 meeting, a breast cancer support group, at Mercy on Memorial. Megan explained how cancer treatments can worsen pelvic floor issues.

“So, I called and got a referral from my surgeon,” she shared. “Made my appointment.”

Megan worked with Tracy to help her return to the activities she loved, while making sure she felt respected and supported. At 63, Tracy had finished half and full marathons, completed triathlons and enjoyed adventures like parasailing, biking and skiing. She wanted to keep living an active life, including helping her neighbors by pulling weeds and walking their dogs. Megan designed a program for Tracy focused on building core and hip strength.

“I love trying any new adventure I can," she stated. “However, my pelvic floor issues limited my ability.”

Thankfully, the plan not only met but exceeded Tracy’s expectations. Being able to do jumping jacks again was a big moment for her. She continues to celebrate small victories and works on her exercises every day. She states she’s feeling great and is looking forward to getting back to everything.

Your 30s are this great time where you're finally old enough to be taken seriously, but suddenly, everything starts to hurt, and your knee, hip or back cracks when you stand up.

Joint issues may already be settling in, especially if you have previous injuries, repetitive stress, obesity or are genetically predisposed.

Follow the advice of Physical Therapist Chris Hanson for a few exercises to keep your joints moving. If you don't take protective action, joint replacement surgery could be your future, but it doesn't have to be. Physical therapists can help you proactively start care for smooth sailing as you enter your 40s and 50s.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. More than half of the people diagnosed with breast cancer will experience side effects following treatment.

Our ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation program can help patients prepare for treatment and manage side effects afterward so they can live well beyond cancer.

Early detection is critical, but so is support throughout the journey. You don't have to face recovery alone.

10/01/2025

It’s National Physical Therapy Month. Our theme throughout October is, “Your future is better with PT!” We will highlight how physical therapy can lead to a better, stronger tomorrow.

Our physical therapists are here to guide patients through every step of recovery, from hospital to home. For our patients, that means helping them return to the moments that matter. For our physical therapists and physical therapist assistants, it means making a difference and helping people move forward.

Join us throughout the month as we highlight the power of physical therapy.
