MPA believes that supporting teen mental wellness is essential. On World Teen Mental Wellness Day, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring young people feel heard, supported, and empowered. When we prioritize teen mental wellness, we’re not just addressing today’s challenges, we’re building healthier adults for tomorrow. Together, we can create communities where every teen feels valued, supported, and hopeful about their future.

Take a look at our latest edition of The Maryland Psychologist on the importance of youth mental health:

Self-injury is often misunderstood, yet it is a sign of deep emotional pain, not a desire for attention. On Self-Injury Awareness Day, we recognize the importance of compassion, awareness, and support for those who may be struggling in silence.

Psychologists play a vital role in helping individuals develop healthier coping strategies, process difficult emotions, and find pathways toward healing. By increasing awareness and reducing stigma, we can help ensure that those affected feel seen, heard, and supported.

If you or someone you know is struggling, know that help is available and healing is possible. You are not alone.

Advocates also emphasized the importance of strong psychological and behavioral science research to guide AI development and protect public well-being.

This Black History Month, the Maryland Psychological Association honors two pioneering psychologists whose work helped shape the field and expand opportunities for future generations.

Dr. Francis Sumner, known as the “Father of Black Psychology,” was the first African American to earn a PhD in psychology. He played a critical role in establishing the psychology department at Howard University and dedicated his career to advancing research, education, and equity within the profession.

Dr. Inez Beverly Prosser made history as the first African American woman to earn a PhD in psychology. Her groundbreaking research examined the educational and psychological development of Black students and emphasized the importance of supportive learning environments. Her work helped inform future conversations around educational equity and opportunity.

The Maryland Psychological Association is proud to recognize Dr. Sumner and Dr. Prosser for their lasting contributions to psychology. Their leadership, resilience, and commitment to advancing knowledge continue to inspire psychologists and students today.
