Labor Day is often treated as the end of summer, but its history is rooted in conflict and change.

The first Labor Day parade took place in New York City in 1882, when about 10,000 workers marched for fair pay and safer conditions.

By 1894, following the unrest of the Pullman Strike, Congress recognized the holiday at the federal level.

The choice of September was intentional.

It provided good weather for families and avoided the political overtones of May Day.

The protections that followed are now taken for granted.

The eight-hour day, the 40-hour work week, overtime rules, safer workplaces, and eventually the two-day weekend were all hard-won outcomes of collective pressure.

Healthcare workers played their own part.

Union 1199, now one of the most influential voices in healthcare labor, began in 1932 with pharmacy and drugstore employees in New York.

At Care Dynamics, we view labor as legacy.

The pharmacists, technologists, and healthcare professionals we serve do more than fill roles.

They hold together systems, strengthen communities, and create the conditions for progress.

This holiday is a reminder that today’s stability was built on yesterday’s struggle.
