THE BACTERIA IN OUR MOUTHS love sugar even more than we do, and that’s bad news for our teeth. 😬 When we eat sugar, some of it remains stuck on our teeth, and those bacteria digest it and then excrete acid that gives us bad breath and wears away at our tooth enamel. Sugar consumption is closely linked to gum disease and tooth decay, and it can eventually lead to needing treatment like fillings and root canal therapy.

Cutting back on sugar is a great step to take for our dental health, but do we even know what counts as sugar? 🤔Sugar is a master of disguise, using a wide range of aliases to hide in foods we don’t usually think of as sweet. These include molasses, maltose, corn syrup (high fructose or otherwise), and dextrose. We can also generally assume that anything ending in -ose or containing the word “sugar” or “syrup” is sugar too.

Our advice for cutting back on sugar is to read the labels on foods before buying it, rely more on home cooking to know exactly what’s going into each meal, and avoid soda, fruit juice, and sugary cereals. 👍

HEALTH CONCERNS CAN BE a lot different for women than for men, and that even includes dental health! 😁

Dental health concerns unique to women:
1. TMD and Sjörgen’s syndrome both affect women more than men.
2. Puberty, pregnancy, and menopause all involve hormonal changes that can make gingivitis and gum inflammation more likely.
3. Eating disorders disproportionately affect women, and the resulting malnutrition damages every system in the body. Bulimia also directly damages the teeth through frequent exposure to stomach acid.

Dental health concerns unique to men:
1. Being less likely to brush and floss regularly. Men are 20% less likely than women to brush twice a day, floss daily, and even replace old toothbrushes! They’re also less likely to go to the dentist for a regular preventative checkup. 😬
2. Because men are more likely to drink, smoke, and chew to***co than women, they are at greater risk of advanced gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer.
