This work is personal for me.

As a trauma therapist and public safety expert, I’ve spent years standing beside officers, first responders, and families affected by crisis. I’ve seen firsthand how a single moment can change a life — and how the right training can prevent tragedy.

My “why” is simple: to protect the 6% of Americans living with serious mental illness and the officers who respond to them.

Through Clinical & Forensic Associates, I’m committed to equipping law enforcement with the empathy, training, and mental health tools they need to serve their communities safely and effectively.

Every officer deserves support.
Every community deserves safety.
Every person deserves compassion.

Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) equips officers to respond safely and effectively to all civilians, including those with:

● Serious mental illness
● Substance use disorders
● Invisible conditions (e.g., autism, PTSD, chronic pain)

By understanding these populations, officers reduce risk, build trust, and improve outcomes for everyone in their community. CFA’s CIT training ensures officers are prepared to protect and serve with knowledge, compassion, and skill.

A significant portion of police work involves responding to calls involving individuals with mental illness—over 21% of agency staff time, according to national data.

This is why mental health awareness is not optional in policing. When officers understand the signs of serious mental illness and are trained in effective de-escalation, outcomes improve for everyone involved.

By integrating empathy, tactical communication, and mental health knowledge, officers can reduce risk, build trust, and increase safety during these complex encounters.
Training matters—and the community feels the impact.

Police departments across the country are adopting Crisis Intervention Training (CIT)— and for good reason. Here are the Top 5 Reasons Agencies Are Making CIT

Mandatory:

1️⃣ Improved Safety for Officers & Civilians
De-escalation reduces the likelihood of injury and unpredictable outcomes.
2️⃣ Better Outcomes for Individuals With Serious Mental Illness
Officers learn how to identify symptoms, respond appropriately, and connect people to services.
3️⃣ Stronger Community Trust
Empathy-centered policing enhances credibility and public confidence.
4️⃣ Reduced Liability & Fewer Use-of-Force Incidents
Agencies with CIT-compliant training see fewer high-risk encounters.
5️⃣ Officers Feel More Confident & Prepared
Training helps officers recognize mental health challenges and respond with skill — not guesswork.

Clinical & Forensic Associates’ CIT program goes beyond the basics, integrating psychology, real-world application, and evidence-based communication strategies.

Officer mental health is just as important as public safety. During her appearance on OWN, Tyreese McAllister emphasizes that counseling and mental health support are essential for officers, not a sign of weakness.

CFA’s training supports both community-focused de-escalation and officer wellness, helping officers manage stress, build resilience, and protect themselves while serving the public.

Understanding serious mental illness is critical for law enforcement officers to protect both themselves and the community. Here are the top three things every officer should know:

1️⃣ Mental illness is common – Many encounters involve individuals experiencing mental health challenges, and recognizing the signs can prevent escalation.
2️⃣ Behavior is a symptom, not a choice – Agitation, confusion, or withdrawal often reflect the illness, not intentional non-compliance.
3️⃣ De-escalation saves lives – Compassionate, evidence-based tactics reduce risk and improve outcomes for everyone involved.

At CFA, our de-escalation and CIT training equips officers with practical tools, role-playing scenarios, and psychology-based strategies to respond safely, effectively, and empathetically.

Bring CIT training to your agency and empower your officers to make a real difference in their communities.
