Level 1 trauma center with round-the-clock service? Specialists that draw patients from miles around? State-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities? The Veterinary Teaching Hospital has a lot in common with human medical centers, but our facility is here to help animal patients: anything from alpacas to zebra finches. As part of the University of Illinois and the state’s only College of Veterinary Medicine, the hospital also plays an important role in educating the veterinarians of tomorrow and expanding knowledge and treatments to improve animal lives. With more than 80 veterinarians on staff, including more than two dozen specialists as well as interns and residents, the hospital has experts in fields from anesthesia to zoo medicine. There are boarded specialists in both large and small animal internal medicine, surgery, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, radiology, emergency and critical care, dermatology, oncology, theriogenology (animal reproduction), and more. Each year more than 20,000 animal patients from across Illinois and beyond visit the hospital. Most are referred by their primary care veterinarian for specialty care, but animal owners can also use our services for routine health care, rehabilitation, 24-hour emergency service and intensive care, or for on-farm animal care provided through an ambulatory service.

We had one awesome pup stop by our Urgent Care Clinic! Ginny came in for evaluation of bite wounds. Luckily, she was a trooper when getting the peanut butter treatment.

At our Veterinary Teaching Hospital, we make sure patients receive the best care possible which means practicing low-stress handling techniques, like using peanut butter during treatments. Low-stress handling makes the trip to the clinic safer for both pets and practitioners by reducing clinic injuries.

Meet Micah Joy, heavy on the JOY. Micah Joy loves to love and he’s never met anyone who can resist his charms. He is an 11-year-old golden retriever who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a common bone cancer in dogs, of his left front leg in June 2023. You read that right, almost three years ago.

He participated in a clinical trial combining radiation therapy with immunotherapy and surgery in the summer of 2023. Micah Joy continues to do very well, and we are proud to say he as had his final visit with us! He is cancer free and loving every day.

Micah Joy’s success helps shape further trials and therapies for dogs with osteosarcoma and we are so happy for him and his family🐾💙
