Level 1 trauma center with round-the-clock service? Specialists that draw patients from miles around? State-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities? The Veterinary Teaching Hospital has a lot in common with human medical centers, but our facility is here to help animal patients: anything from alpacas to zebra finches. As part of the University of Illinois and the state’s only College of Veterinary Medicine, the hospital also plays an important role in educating the veterinarians of tomorrow and expanding knowledge and treatments to improve animal lives. With more than 80 veterinarians on staff, including more than two dozen specialists as well as interns and residents, the hospital has experts in fields from anesthesia to zoo medicine. There are boarded specialists in both large and small animal internal medicine, surgery, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, radiology, emergency and critical care, dermatology, oncology, theriogenology (animal reproduction), and more. Each year more than 20,000 animal patients from across Illinois and beyond visit the hospital. Most are referred by their primary care veterinarian for specialty care, but animal owners can also use our services for routine health care, rehabilitation, 24-hour emergency service and intensive care, or for on-farm animal care provided through an ambulatory service.

Zoey Marie, a 3-year-old black Lab, came to the Emergency and Critical Care Service with severe swelling of her face, mouth, and tongue after a suspected ingestion of rat poison. The toxin prevented her blood from clotting, leading to dangerous bleeding and airway obstruction—making this a life-threatening emergency.

The team acted quickly, providing intensive, around-the-clock care including a breathing tube, plasma and blood transfusions, vitamin K therapy, and medications to keep her comfortable and stable. Over the following days, Zoey showed just how strong she is as she steadily improved until we could safely remove her breathing tube.

Today, Zoey is stable, eating and drinking on her own, and enjoying being home to continue her recovery 💕

We’re so proud to celebrate this ICU win with Zoey and her dedicated owners. She even got to take home a special “ICU Warrior” bandana that was custom made for her to mark her incredible journey. She is pictured here with her 4th-year veterinary student, Amaris (left), and her owner (right).

Way to go, Zoey—you truly are a warrior! 💪🐶

Charlotte Ann visited the Dermatology/Otology Service for her "Spring Allergy Tune-Up" and brought her usual high spirits and spark of color. Even on the most cold, dreary days, Charlotte Ann reminded these fourth-year veterinary students that spring (and graduation) is right around the corner.

Owen had a paw-blem to fix 💙

He stopped by to see Dr. Baratta-Martin in Primary Care after a nail cap got stuck in his paw pad. While we took care of the minor procedure, Owen kept morale high with snack breaks (a true professional). Once everything was all set, he rewarded himself with a well-earned nap, because being that brave is exhausting. 😴🐈‍⬛

Rexy has osteosarcoma of his right front leg and has participated in a study looking at the development of patient-specific tumor vaccines from their actual cancer cells.

This work is being done by Dr. Matthew Berry’s Discovery lab and is a very exciting new way to look at cancer treatment. Rexy is doing great and loves to come back for rechecks.

We had one awesome pup stop by our Urgent Care Clinic! Ginny came in for evaluation of bite wounds. Luckily, she was a trooper when getting the peanut butter treatment.

At our Veterinary Teaching Hospital, we make sure patients receive the best care possible which means practicing low-stress handling techniques, like using peanut butter during treatments. Low-stress handling makes the trip to the clinic safer for both pets and practitioners by reducing clinic injuries.
