Level 1 trauma center with round-the-clock service? Specialists that draw patients from miles around? State-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities? The Veterinary Teaching Hospital has a lot in common with human medical centers, but our facility is here to help animal patients: anything from alpacas to zebra finches. As part of the University of Illinois and the state’s only College of Ve

terinary Medicine, the hospital also plays an important role in educating the veterinarians of tomorrow and expanding knowledge and treatments to improve animal lives. With more than 80 veterinarians on staff, including more than two dozen specialists as well as interns and residents, the hospital has experts in fields from anesthesia to zoo medicine. There are boarded specialists in both large and small animal internal medicine, surgery, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, radiology, emergency and critical care, dermatology, oncology, theriogenology (animal reproduction), and more. Each year more than 20,000 animal patients from across Illinois and beyond visit the hospital. Most are referred by their primary care veterinarian for specialty care, but animal owners can also use our services for routine health care, rehabilitation, 24-hour emergency service and intensive care, or for on-farm animal care provided through an ambulatory service.

Sneak peek 👀 Big things are happening at with the expansion of the Animal Cancer Care Clinic. Cali has been a patient of various services at the hospital over her 14 years and managed to wag her way into a behind the scenes tour.

🐾Here is what she was able to fetch:

🔹 What is currently being built at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital?
We’re excited to be building a new Animal Cancer Care Clinic, an expansion of the existing Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This new space will allow us to grow and enhance the oncology services, helping us care for even more pets in need.

🔹 When is the Animal Cancer Care Clinic expected to open?
The Animal Cancer Care Clinic is anticipated to open in mid to late summer 2026. We’ll share updates as we get closer to the opening day.

🔹 Will it have a separate entrance?
Yes! The Animal Cancer Care Clinic will have its own dedicated entrance and reception area (seen in the image with Cali) for patients and their families. We’ll provide clear directions and arrival instructions as the opening date approaches.

🔹 How will parking be affected after construction?
We understand that parking has been a bit challenging during construction, and we truly appreciate your patience. The good news is that additional parking will be available once the project is complete, improving access for everyone visiting the hospital.

The Community Medicine Program crushed it with their Spay-A-Thon event. Spearheaded by Dr. Laura Frazier, director of the Pet Population Control and Community Medicine Program, and with the help of student volunteers, the team successfully spayed and neutered over 100 feral cats!

They also provided vaccines, preventative care, and wound care for these animals.

Opportunities like these not only support our local community but also give veterinary students valuable hands-on experience before they graduate.

Way to go! 🧡

Fenn and Stark are two very active huskies who have been coming to for out-patient therapy. Although they are getting older, the regular therapy they receive keeps them living their best lives.

Artic breeds are pretty well known for being big clowns, but Fenn and Stark are right at home here waiting for their parents to pick them up. ☺️

Zoey Marie, a 3-year-old black Lab, came to the Emergency and Critical Care Service with severe swelling of her face, mouth, and tongue after a suspected ingestion of rat poison. The toxin prevented her blood from clotting, leading to dangerous bleeding and airway obstruction—making this a life-threatening emergency.

The team acted quickly, providing intensive, around-the-clock care including a breathing tube, plasma and blood transfusions, vitamin K therapy, and medications to keep her comfortable and stable. Over the following days, Zoey showed just how strong she is as she steadily improved until we could safely remove her breathing tube.

Today, Zoey is stable, eating and drinking on her own, and enjoying being home to continue her recovery 💕

We’re so proud to celebrate this ICU win with Zoey and her dedicated owners. She even got to take home a special “ICU Warrior” bandana that was custom made for her to mark her incredible journey. She is pictured here with her 4th-year veterinary student, Amaris (left), and her owner (right).

Way to go, Zoey—you truly are a warrior! 💪🐶
