Level 1 trauma center with round-the-clock service? Specialists that draw patients from miles around? State-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities? The Veterinary Teaching Hospital has a lot in common with human medical centers, but our facility is here to help animal patients: anything from alpacas to zebra finches. As part of the University of Illinois and the state’s only College of Veterinary Medicine, the hospital also plays an important role in educating the veterinarians of tomorrow and expanding knowledge and treatments to improve animal lives. With more than 80 veterinarians on staff, including more than two dozen specialists as well as interns and residents, the hospital has experts in fields from anesthesia to zoo medicine. There are boarded specialists in both large and small animal internal medicine, surgery, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, radiology, emergency and critical care, dermatology, oncology, theriogenology (animal reproduction), and more. Each year more than 20,000 animal patients from across Illinois and beyond visit the hospital. Most are referred by their primary care veterinarian for specialty care, but animal owners can also use our services for routine health care, rehabilitation, 24-hour emergency service and intensive care, or for on-farm animal care provided through an ambulatory service.

While routine spays were historically not recommended for Guinea pigs, thoughts are changing as recent alternative surgical approaches have been implemented and more is being learned about reproductive disease in the species.

“An elective spay in healthy guinea pigs can serve several purposes: it reduces the risk of developing reproductive disease, provides effective contraception, and is technically easier to perform and less likely to involve complications in the absence of pathology,” Dr. Mariana Sosa Higareda explains.

Hazik began visiting the Dermatology/Otology Service in June 2025, and while her family, friends, and the veterinary staff all appreciated her inner beauty, it was clear the Hazik's quality of life could benefit from a glow up of her outer beauty. Voila! Six months later, Hazik looks and, more importantly, feels so much better now that her allergies are under control. Happy 2026, Hazik! May it be your best year ever! 🥰

Meet Dr. Stefania Gelendi, a clinical assistant professor in the small animal emergency and critical care service.

"I’ve always been fascinated by how quickly situations can change and how small decisions can make all the difference. There’s something uniquely fulfilling about stabilizing a patient on the edge and watching them recover. It’s science and humanity at their rawest form. That sense of urgency and meaning is what made me fall in love with emergency and critical care and what continues to inspire me every day in the ICU."

Say hello to Voodoo. This little guy is so sweet and tears up the agility arena when not contributing to science.

Voodoo is currently enrolled in one of our oral melanoma trials and is doing great. He stays here in hospital for a few days when he comes for treatments and he has captured the heart of the whole oncology team. So much personally in that little fluff. He loves laps and to be held like a baby. It’s quite adorable. 😎

If your dog occasionally vomits yellow bile early in the morning, it might be more common and less alarming than you think.

Dr. Canaan Shores from 's urgent and convenient care service explains bilious vomiting syndrome, a condition where pets vomit bile after not eating, such as in the early morning hours. Many pets improve with simple changes to feeding schedules, diets, or supportive medications.

Read the full story to learn when this condition may be the culprit:

Bilious vomiting syndrome may occur when bile moves backward from the intestines to the stomach. It usually happens early in the morning.
