In February, our Fine Arc at The Arc, Oneida-Lewis program paid tribute to Aaron Douglas, one of the most influential visual artists of the Harlem Renaissance.

In 1935, Douglas co-founded the Harlem Artists Guild to advocate for Black artists through the Works Progress Administration, and later established the art department at Fisk University in Tennessee.

Together, our artists recreated one of Douglas’s most powerful works, Into Bo***ge, inspired by Art Deco and Synthetic Cubism. The piece portrays silhouetted figures in chains moving toward waiting ships, a striking representation of the trauma of enslavement.

The project became a meaningful lesson in both art and history, showing how Douglas used his canvas and skill in 1936 to create one of the most enduring visual interpretations of slavery, still widely studied today. The photos in this post show the group collaborating from start to finish.
