CDV - 5th Massachusetts Infantry / 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery - KIA - Petersburg - Asa H Melvin. A different posed view is seen in the Historical Data System Data Base. Melvin enlisted in April, 1861 into the 5th Mass. as a Private and was mustered out in July, 1861 then mustered into the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery in August, 1862, re-enlisting in December, 1863. he is listed as killed at Petersburg on June 16, 1864 with his body never recovered. The CDV has a photographer's back mark of Yeaw & Co., Lawrence (Massachusetts) and has remnants of a tax stamp on reverse. Also has a very light period pencil inscription on reverse of "C. Root(?)" which may have been reason for a descendant of Root thinking that was his ancestor. May have been more of a presentation. This was originally listed as Charles Root of the 2nd MO. Cav. which had come from a descendant of Root. The Mass. photographer was a mystery to me but thanks to friend Dale Niesen, this correction is made. $158. (Postage Included - US Only) ON HOLD

CDV - Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside (as a full bird Colonel of 1st Rhode Island Infantry) - Burnside raised the 1st R.I. Infantry as a three month regiment. He commanded a Brigade during the Battle of First Bull Run. Later, as a Brigadier General he was stationed in North Carolina and was promoted to Major General for his work. He would serve well at Antietam but would falter later, eventually placed in command of the Department of Ohio. After the War would be a three time Governor of Rhode Island and US Senator from R.I. The image is a clean view of a standing Burnside taken early in the War, Colonel's straps visible. Back mark is E. Anthony from Brady's negative. SOLD

CDV - Massachusetts Sergeant - unidentified - Waist-up view of Sergeant with belt & US plate along with his over the shoulder cartridge box strap & breast plate. There is a Cambridge photographer Harley & Metcalf in Massachusetts. CDV looks much lighter than actual CDV due to lighting. CDV also does not have the clarity of a first generation image, possibly made for the family from a tintype. $48. (Postage Included - US Only)

While Packwood was in the regiment, they were involved in the battles of Hatcher's Run and Petersburg, Va. Image was taken by Boston Photographer Whipple and retains a tax stamp on reverse (indicating an 1864 or later photograph). Id's through another image shown on the Historical Data Systems website. $78. (Includes Postage - US Only)

CDV - MOH & Severely Wounded at Gettysburg - Daniel Butterfield (as a Brigadier General). He would eventually make it to the rank of Major General, obviously this taken earlier. Mustered in as Colonel of the 12th New York Militia and was promoted to Brig. General in September, 1861. Being wounded at Gaines Mill and would later be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions. He would go on to command during many other battles. As Cheif of Staff under Gen. TINTYPE IN CDV MOUNT - 10th Illinois Cavalry - James Williamson - Gem size tintype on cdv mount, ID'd in period pencil on reverse "James Williamson / Co. I 10th Ills Cav / Sidney, Champaign / Co., Ills". The photographer is Field in Cincinnati. This is one of a number of these that came together, all gem tins on a cdv mount, all ID'd (mostly in pencil), all from different regiments and the one thing they had in common was that they all went into the VRC (Veteran Reserve Corps). There usually aren't many decent records for the VRC but was able to find that about five of them were assigned as guards at Camp Chase, in Columbus, so I'm guessing this is also this soldier's assignment. One military button visible on his vest. Williamson mustered into the 10th Illinois Cavalry on July 1, 1862 and was transferred to the VRC on August 10, 1863 - no mention of being wounded. Discharge date is not listed. During his time in the 10th Cav., the unit took part in the battles of Marshville, MO., Mud Town, Cross Hollow and Richmond, AR. $73. (Postage Included - US Only)

CDV - 140th New York Infantry - Lt. Charles Prudhomme (Prudhom) - Image of Prudhomme is in civilian attire with a period ink inscription on reverse of "Miss Bessie Rodgers / Box 88 Larned, Kansas / Pawnee County" then also the inscription in ink "1st Lieut. Charles Ovid Prudhomme / Act. Adj. 140th N.Y.V.". I actually have a standing shot of Prudhomme (also in civilian attire with an inscription that includes the 140th & 44th NY if the purchaser of this one is interested). No photographer's b/m. Looks like the image was in an envelope for mailing and the glue from the flap stuck to the reverse. $ 43. (Postage Included - US Only) ON HOLD

CDV - 17th U.S. Infantry - Boardman C. Spaulding. Not much can be obtained on Spaulding but do know that he was present for duty on July 29, 1862 in Co. H at the age of 18 as a Quarter Master Sgt. and was discharged in the field February 22, 1864. He is sporting a 5th Corps badge above his top button (the 17th was assigned to the 5th Corps). It is signed on the reverse in period ink 'Etc. / Board C. Spaulding'. Photographer is Mason and Wolcott in New York. During his known time in the 17th, the Regiment took part in the battles of: Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Stones River, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Manassas Gap. CDV has been trimmed to fit in an album. $110. (Postage Included - US only)

CDV - Major Willie Bagley - The Wisconsin Infant Drummer. CDV of 4 year old Willie Bagley in a zouave uniform with his drum. Bagley performed for P.T. Barnum in 1864 for one month. He would beat out military cadences for the crowds, reportedly as well as a Union Army Drummer. Image has several small stains around the Fez hat and is identified on the reverse in period pencil "Major Willie Bagley / 4 years old". The Library of Congress has possession of one that has the same inscription with the year '1864' under his age. Appears the same person wrote both so may have been a worker at P.T. Barnum's. This one had a modern pencil id inconsistant with Bagley's near the bottom but no idea were that information came from. SOLD
