Are you curious about what makes an essential oil absolutely pure?
I have some simple (yet scientific!) explanations to give you a good understanding of what goes into creating essential oils that allows them to pack a powerful punch!
Essential oils are rich in molecules that help carry oxygen, nutrients, and other substances through our cell membranes. When essential oils are combined with impure or toxic substances, and they will carry those through every cell of your body as well.
This is why it's so important to obtain authentic, quality, and truly pure essential oils. Otherwise, there's a risk of unknowingly consuming toxins, or worse – deciding that essential oils don't work because an inferior essential oil product was used!
What Makes An Oil Pure? Is That Important To Me?
There are multiple ways an essential oil can be contaminated and still claim “purity” since those types of regulations do not exist yet. Some suppliers will extend or stretch the oils by diluting them with fatty oils or by adding alcohol – or even adding surfactants and emulsifiers. Suppliers do this to make the essential oils less expensive.
While a high price does not necessarily translate to high quality, it is of great importance to be careful of oils coming with a super-cheap price tag.
If an essential oil is extended with a fatty oil, you can usually detect it by the greasy feel on the skin. A pure essential oil will not leave a greasy feel on the skin after a few moments. Additionally, a truly pure essential oil will not leave an oily mark on paper when dried. Keep in mind that some oils do have a natural tint or stain though.
A simple way to test for such emulsifiers in your essential oils is by placing a drop of it in plain water. A pure essential oil will float on the top, whereas emulsified mixtures will dissolve in water and produce milky or opaque solutions.

Have You Tried Essential Oils On Your Cloth Masks?
Like many others, wearing a protective face covering may have become a part of your routine lately. It's recommended by the CDC, but wearing a face mask isn't always a pleasant experience. Essential oils could help!
Make a diluted mask spray with a very fine mister and use it as an easy (and natural!) way to instantly refresh cloth face masks and support your overall well-being. Just a spritz can make running errands a little more pleasant, supportive, and hopefully a little less stressful too.
Here's what I used…
- 4 ounces distilled water
- 2 ounces witch hazel
- 5-10 drops essential oil – the amount may vary based on your preferences or with the oil you choose, but I recommend starting lightly and increase the drops later if wanted.
Because oil and water don't mix, witch hazel acts as an emulsifier to help the ingredients combine.
Some oils and blends to try…
- Lavender
- AromaEase
- Bergamot
- CitrusFresh
- Thieves
- Clove (this smells incredible with a little Orange mixed in)
